Re: name changes
I did a search for someone and the Misasi surname was linked with the Rich/Riccio.Ricci surname...will look for it because this sounds very familiar. Have you also checke out this post..ar928 wrote:Alright, i have confirmed that
RICH
possible 1930 US Census
ancestry.com page 30 of 35
Athens, Greene, NY
Brick Row, owns home
- RICK (RICH), Anthony, 22 (abt 1907), married age 20 (abt 1927),
b in NY, parents b in Italy, laborer - brick yard
- wife Mariella, 17, (abt 1912-3), b in NY, parents b in Italy
- son John, 7 mos, b in NY
They are definitely my great-grandparents, as I forgot that my grandfather was indeed born in Athens, so the 7mos. old is him haha. That's funny to think he was once that young.
Also
Francesco PORTO, 18, single
SS Vincenzo Florio, 15 Mar 1905, Napoli to NY, line 27
last residence Paterno C. (may be Paterno Calabro, Cosenza), going to Glasgow (Glasco), Ulster, NY, joining uncle Giovanni Pugliesi?
He is for sure my grandfather's grandfather on his mom's side, as that obituary of Thomas Porto confirms that (Charlie Porto, my grandfather's uncle, I met at his funeral, and Frank and Clara did indeed have 9 kids.)
Right now I am trying to find at least a first name for my great-great grandfather (on the rich side), and my dad remembers that he was told the name was changed from Riccio to Rich at Ellis Island.
I was also trying to find Clara Misasi on the ship manifest...but I can't find her, is it possible she was born in the US? Even though her brothers/cousins Luigi and Gaetano came in 1900/1900. Are there ship manifests from before 1892? Also could you find her age in the 1920 or '30 census?
http://italiangenealogy.tardio.com/Foru ... iccio.html
I'm sure I linked that last name with this post somehow but I don't have the written info handy right now..

Re: name changes
Actually, ar, you did provide us with a good summary... the one that Nuccia posted above is good.... only asked for another one since further info was added... just wanted you to verify if we are on the right track...mfjp wrote:ar,

Thanks for the link to the other one Nuccia... was busy during that time in June and never even read it...
That Ricci surname!! arrrrrrrrr....
(gotta see that Johnny Dep Pirates movie... love that guy)
I too have Ricci in my family tree... what a research nightmare it is!! (from Central Italy)...
I've spent some time looking through all the Italian "Rich"... Ricchio, Riccio, Ricci... and even RECH...
I was very surprised to see how many Italian Rich (exact spelling) surnames were on the Ancestry data base...
When I realised that many of the Riccio's - especially from Amorosi moved to Athens/ Ulster/Glasco area.. I thought it may be an OK lead...
Wouldn't it be nice if vj could find a census record of Riccio's living near Mariella's neighbourhood
Now to read the link Nuccia posted...

Re: name changes
Hi all!
A little ramble here
...
Quite a few 'Rich' families on same census page in 1930 in Athens, Greene County (earlier post). Trouble finding connections with these families though without some more confirmed family first names...
Going back to manifests (thanks Maria!) Rich, Porto & Misasi families may have also started out in Ulster county in 2 locations - Glasco and Saugerties.
Looking at earlier census, can only (so far) find an Antonio with a birth date close enough in 1910 & 1920 in Saugerties, Ulster County (above).
A connection appears to be the family occupation in both towns (Athens & Saugerties) - brick making.
Maria, U R right, lot's of Rich's in the area. Perhaps tracking some of the names, inc Misasi, from Maria's manifests to the matching census will help.
Another strong connection is Paterno (which one??) in Cosenza.
Maybe there's a WWI or WWII draft registration for one of these names (Rich, Ricci, Misasi, Porto) in Athens, Glasco or Saugerties born in Paterno??
Really hoping someone from ar's family recognizes some names!

Re: name changes
Hi jcsm,
Absolutely!
Lots of connections to be made to this (apparently) very large family
Is Amorosi a possibility do you think, which families?? (see Maria's note above)
Does it sound like the brickmaking companies may have advertised in
these towns in Italy for workers?
vj
For some perspective (if these families are related) - a little historical background on Saugerties, Glasco (in Saugerties) & Athens. Appears brick making was a major industry:
Saugerties, Ulster County, History (excerpts) http://saugerties.ny.us/history.html
When the early industries failed after mid-century, paper, brick making, gunpowder, farm goods, river ice, and especially blue stone from area quarries, replaced them. Two thousand-men were employed at one time in quarrying, dressing and shipping about one and a half million dollars' worth of blue stone annually from Glasco, Malden, and Saugerties. The blue stone was used for curbing and paving, crosswalks, doorsills and windowsills and much of it found it's way to New York City.
The village population stabilized at about 4,000 around 1870 after forty years of sharp increase and remained almost unchanged for one hundred years. Irish, Germans, and later Italians established themselves as workers in the mills, quarries, and brickyards as well as in the village
The brick industry grew in the 1880's when Washburn Brothers and Empire State Brick Company opened their brickyards. Later the Staples and Hutton Brickyards were established.
Glasco is a community in the town of Saugerties. http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:tF ... n&ie=UTF-8
Settled largely by unskilled workers, first from Ireland and then from Italy, they came to the area in great numbers in the late 19th century by ferry after landing in New York City. They tended to lived in company housing on the banks of the river. At one point, the town boasted over six brick factories, a ferry service, a school, churches and several saloons. Bricks were sent down the Hudson River by barge to furnish the construction of America's cities.
Athens, Greene County http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:Hd ... n&ie=UTF-8
Athens, formed from Catskill and Coxsackie, is located on the Hudson near the center of the county. Although below the main ridges of the Catskills, there is limestone rock in sufficient quantities to be quarried and burned for building purposes. The banks of the Hudson are rich in a tenacious clay from which building brick is made, this latter industry being the main one of the town

Hope your husband doesn't hurt too much!
Going to keep looking for census, etc., this search is taking on a life of it's own... Eventually there has to be a connection made with so many people helping out!
Would really like to see some more confirmation from ar - could update our 'knowns' with some likely birth & marriage dates.
Catch you later, vj
