Vincenzo Caputo Help

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Vincenzo Caputo Help

Post by CaputoBruno »

Hey guys,

I need an extra set of eyes on this.

I have been trying to track down a G. Grandfather Vincenzo James Vincent Caputo. I just received his Social Security SS5 application and I feel like I am finally making some progress.

It states that his SSN is 115-07-3428. His fathers name is Michael Caputo and his mother is Rose D'Anbrosio
At the time of the application he lived at 148 Lakeview Avenue, East White Plains NY and was 52yrs old on April 9, 1937.

Are any of you able to locate his parents, possible immigration records, etc. Also it is hard to read on the document, but it states his place of birth as Italy, PARULO but it is sloppy writing.

I have attached it here. There appears to be a discrepancy with the birth date. The date written on the application is not the date that the social security administration has when I search the SS# file on ancestry. That said, the parents are indeed listed here as well.

It is also a bit heartbreaking to see the handwriting. They truly were coming to seek a better life for themselves and their families, many of whom were uneducated and poorly equipped when they arrived, yet they came anyway.

Perhaps the town is Padula in Salerno province. The surname Caputo is found there, as is the surname D'Ambrosio.

EDIT TO ADD:

Here is the birth act of Vincenzo Caputo in Padula in 1881.
#213
Dated 2 December 1881- birth on 1 December
Father: Michele Caputo
Mother: Rosa D'Ambrosio

Wow that is amazing. I think you are right. It very well could be Padula. This seems to match what we have been told that he was in the S. Italy region. I would think that a combination of Caputo and D'Ambrosio would be pretty rare. This is amazing!!!

This is a longshot, but is it possible that he married Mary Bruno or there was a Bann posted in this town for the wedding or the birth of his daughter Rose Caputo in the US?

My grandmother Rose Caputo was born in the US in 1916. I have both her civil birth certificate and her baptism record from Mt. Carmel church in Utica. It states that her mother is Maria Bruno and father is Vincenzo Caputo, both born in Italy. That said, it does not show that Maria and Vincenzo married in Utica and I have been unable to locate a marriage license. Anyone familiar with Padula region able to check to see if Vincenzo and Maria's marriage record was posted there anywhere? I would think that they would be married in the US but certainly possible it was reported back home. Having a rough time tracking down a marriage license.

Just so the community is not spending to much more time on this particular case. We were able to find our Vincenzo. He was actually born in Rocanova Italy. His father is Antonio and mother is Rosalba. He came to the US with his first wife Lucia Izzo in 1901 to be with his father in Utica. Lucia unfortunately passed away in 1906 and Vincenzo (James) took a job in PA to work in the coal mines. He married my G. Grandmother Mary in Uniontown in 1911 and they had Anthony and James in PA. They then moved back to Utica to be close to Vincenzo's family. John passed away at 9mo in 1915 and is buried in Utica. My Grandmother Rose was born in Utica in 1916 and her brother James in 1918. What was throwing us off is that it was not until we started tracking the children and found that Anthony and John were born in PA did we locate the marriage record. Once we found the marriage record though it all lined up. The record shows Vincenzo was previously married and his fathers name was Antonio and Mothers name was Rosalba. Also Vincenzo died in 1924 and on the death certificate it states Missanello (Which is where he married his first wife) and Roccanova is a small community near Missanello. Lesson learned, dont narrow your search so tight that you miss the small movements of your ancestors. Thanks so much to this community! Sending love to all.
