Please advise if I have a 1948 case?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Please advise if I have a 1948 case?

Post by Rhonda Z »

Hi.

My line is as follows :
My gg grandfather was born 1878 in Italy and (married) my gg grandmother also born in Italy 1880.
Their daughter,my g grandmother was born in South Africa 1900.
My grandfather her son born 1924 in South Africa.
My father his son born 1947 in South Africa.
Me,1984,South Africa.

I cant seem to get a clear answer and looking it up online the answers are all over the place.
I understand I would need to confirm my gg grandfather did not give up his citizenship.
I dont know where to start and indeed want to confirm if this is a 1948 case.
And I would imagine this will be a costly process?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, there is a woman in the line, with the son born before 1948, so it is a 1948 case, need a decision by a Court in Italy, you need to find a lawyer for this.

It's the first time I see here a request from South Africa, did South Africa gave in 1900 and later citizenship iure soli to children born there as in South America?
If so, your ancestors until you had been South African citizen without having asked?

Correction: since when South Africa
is considered independent, with its own citizenship? 1931 or 1961?

First, you need to verify if your ancestor arrived from Italy asked British citizenship (so loosing the Italian) or he died still Italian.
Details should be on the site of the Italian consulates in South Africa.

Thank you.On his DC he was listed as being Italian but of course I will need to confirm this.
I have contacted the consulate...will start there.

I am probably taking a chance here...but are there perhaps any lawyers who offer there services pro bono for such cases?
If not can anyone advise as to what possible costs I would be looking at?

I'll look the site of the consulate, to see for any difference with respect to other consulates. However the naturalization or not of your ancestor should be certified by South Africa, not the Italian consulate.
I'll look which is the competent office, then I'll write here.
For this, you need to ask first a birth certificate of your Italian ancestor, + marriage (you said it was in Italy), + (ev. divorce) + death certificate (in South Africa).
Then you need the same documents for the descendants until you.

Otherwise there are various who advertise on other forums, you may write me a PM.

It is not written which is the office competent to certify the nationalization of a person.

Thank you so much.
Yes I have his birth record and his death certificate however Im still trying to locate their marriage certificate.
I appreciate your help.
Its not going to be an easy feat here in SA obtaining all the certificates I require but will start at point A and go from there.
I will look further into finding a lawyer.
