Santa Maria Assunta, Valmontone Lazio

Post by MarcuccioV »

I read recently on a family tree page which includes many of my ancestors (not on this website but built by a former member here) that all parish records for Santa Maria Assunta (Collegiata) Catholic parish in Valmontone, Lazio (& possibly Santo Stefano Romanian Orthodox as well) were destroyed in the WWII (1944) bombing of the commune -- yet the civil records from 1871-on are available. The churches themselves were mildly damaged, but not obliterated by any means (although most of the town was leveled).

The tree owner was able to rebuild much lost info through the notary records from Velletri.

Can anyone confirm this (Pippo, mmogno..?) to be true..? If so, it's disappointing, to say the least.

I'd prefer to confirm destruction of the records before attempting a difficult and frustrating search with the diocese(s).

Grazie in anticipo per qualsiasi aiuto.
Mark

They've replied, and said they don't have it,and we might ask to Segni section.
I'll look for their address.
Are you interested in Artena registers, too?

They say they only have registers from Velletri and Lariano.
I will search the address of the section of Segni of the Archive.

Hi Mark,
I got a reply from Segni.
They say they have registers from Artena and Valmontone.
They did not explicitly say they have the registers of Santa Maria Assunta, though I explicitly asked about it.
However, I see there are three Parishes in Valmontone, and two of them were established in the XX century, so, I guess they have the registers of Santa Maria.
They also said the registers for Labico should be in the Historical Diocesan Archive of Tivoli/Palestrina.

Thank you, Pippo.

I know they have the civil registers, which are available on Antenati. Fingers crossed they have parish registers. Now, how to access them..?

One step closer... :D

So if I need info on particular ancestors whom I can only guess or approximate birth/death dates, how would one go about such a monumental task..?

This is their reply:

in riferimento alla sua richiesta, le posso dire che si possono affidare a genealogisti le ricerche relative alla storia della famiglia. Qualora le sia necessario individuare l’atto di una sola persona, ci occorre sapere il nome e l’ambito temporale da ricercare.

with reference to your request, I can tell you, you can untrust a genealogist with the researches about your family. In case you need to find records about ONLY ONE PERSON, we need to know the name and time frame of the research.

Their response is slightly confusing -- so are they saying to have a genealogist (like you) do the research..? In person..? Otherwise I have to choose a single person..?
