Emigration

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Are there any record sources for emigration out of towns in Italy?

I know that some towns kept “ liste di emigrati,” as many years ago, a local historian for my mother- in- law’s ancestral town in Caserta Province had access to such lists and was able to provide a cousin of my husband with a list of town residents related to my MIL’s ancestry who emigrated to South America and then returned to the town years later. The list had passenger list info, I seem to recall, and dates of departure from the town, as well as dates of return to the town, if the person did return to Italy. You’d have to write to a town though to see if it kept this kind of info. I’ve never seen any such lists published.

Also there are atti di cittadinanze for some towns in which residents requested a change of residency to another town. I know you can access such acts online for the town of Melilli from 1930 to abt 1940. Earlier ones are only accessible at a family history center. I found such an act years ago in one of my ancestral towns in which the person was requesting that his place of residence be changed to the U.S. (Brooklyn, NY, in fact). Normally those emigres, however, just wanted to change their places of residence to other towns in Italy which had become their primary places of business.

I was familiar with the atti di cittadinanze but not the liste di emigrati.

I'm interested in moves out of several towns including on the mainland.
