RE: DEATH RECORD SEARCH IN REGGIO CALABRIA

Post by mezzogiorno62 »

subject paolo labate most likely died between 1906 and 1925. as he was born in 1827 and at 79 survived his wife fortunata who died in 1906 age 70.if she had survived him she would have been noted as his widow which she wasn't.i checked every year from 1906 to 1915 both indexed and unindexed. i checked the indexed years 1916 to 1925 when he would have been close to 100. nothing. even checked death records here in massachusetts as its possible he joined son orazio who resided here after his wife fortunata died in 1906. nothing. possibly his death records were lost-both in reggio or here in massachusetts. a real mystery.

death record for fortunata labate. reggio calabria 1906. image 34 of 680. numero 66 death records tend to be very inaccurate. ages given at death by others rarely if ever match the actual age of the decedent. and in this instance the mothers surname was politano or pulitano not pellicane.

So Fortunata's father was (deceased) Paolo Labate, and her husband was also Paolo Labate...

And...Fortunata is stated as age 75 in this death act...

For easier viewing...here is the link to her death act
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 52/w9WnkGQ

Did Fortunata have a brother Diego?
Here is the death of Diego Labate (age 73) in March of that same year...
Father is deceased Paolo, and mother is deceased Maria Pulitano

Not sure how many documents you've grabbed yet.
Here is Paolo and Fortunata marriage and processetti. 4 Sept 1859

Images 841-847

Also found a son Antonino born in 1861

Haven't found Orazio yet. wanted to make sure I was chasing the correct family. Extracting births, looks like by the 1890's there were at least 5 different Paolo Lebates A younger one was also married to Fortunata Versaci, this is not the same Fortunata.

fortunata was born in 1836 and would have been 70 not 75. as i said inaccuracy in death records. fortunata's husband and father both named paolo labate. lots of name overlapping in this line. she married paolo labate in 1859. i believe they had a son diego. the diego in this record would probably be a brother of hers as same parents are noted. still no luck in finding fortunata's husband paolo who survived her.

Thank you for that information.

Since records can have errors - and Paolo MAY have predeceased her...
To be thorough, I checked all the Paolo Labate deaths from 1886 through 1895, but he was not there.
I will also check 1896 through 1906.

save you the time. i checked 1866-1875,1876-1885,1886-1895,all years indexed and unindexed 1896-1906,1907-1915,and indexed records 1916-1925. nothing. and it does appear paolo survived fortunata. i tried to cover every possibility. highly unlikely he died elsewhere outside reggio. my guess is the death record was lost or never recorded.

It looks like you did!

Maybe he was a victim of the 1908 earthquake, and like many, his death was not recorded.

i checked 1908 and nothing there. possibly his death record was lost or never even recorded due to the earthquake. my thoughts as well. i checked every year from as early as 1872 when son orazio was born and right up until 1925 when he would have been 98 (born 1827) which was very unlikely. very thorough but found nothing. just my luck his was one of the missing records.
