Foundling records
Foundling records
Hi. My GG grandmother Fermina Di Stasio was a foundling. I’ve been searching the foundling records for Salerno, and have found two fermina’s but both have different surnames to my relatives . My relative Fermina married Salvatore Mansi. And she was raised by a Alfonso and a rachele cioffi. I’d like to know if was common for the foundling to change the surnames they were given? Thanks in advance. Lucie

Here is Fermina's Death Record if you don’t have it:
Death No 3: Fermina di Stasio
Registered Ravello on 6 February 1913
Luigi Mansi, 52 yo and Pantaleone Mansi, 62 yo, both grave diggers registered the death.
Fermina died at 5 am yesterday (5 February 1913) in via S.Giovanni alla Costa. She was 54 yo, a casalinga (housewife), residing in Ravello, born in Salerno from unknown parents. She was the wife of Salvatore Mansi.

I also went through those allegati records and noticed that Fermina seemed to be a name given to baby girls left at the wheel. My thinking is that if she had changed her name this would’ve been noted when she married. When she married she would’ve been required to present her birth record which would have her full name on it. (There would also be an annotation on the original birth record.)

Hi Lucie
Just a thought. You may like to try writing to the town of Ravello and request they send you a photo copy of Fermina di Stasio's Birth Extract contained within Fermina and Salvatore's marriage allegati. You would need to quote the year of marriage (1880), Marriage Act No (2), and the names of the spouses (Salvatore Mansi and Fermina di Stasio). Marriage Record: https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 23/Lm8VdJM
