Abandoned Child

Post by nkokolis »

Hello, I was told that my great grandmother Giovanna Garofano was orphaned at birth. I found this birth record that may be a match! However, I'm not grasping the full situation by translating only certain words. I cannot determine who presented the baby; the role of the Oynirio branch; why the mother agreed not to be named; and was the baby found with the listed clothing items? Any help would be appreciated! Thx, Nadine

Ospizio (not Oynirio) Filiale = orphanage.

On 28 December 1893 in the office of the Comune of Nicosia Calogera Mitra, 24 yo, peasant, living in Villadoro, declared that at 5 hours on 27/12/1893 in a house in Via Maestra a woman not allowing to be named gave birth to a girl to which the Official gave the name Giovanna Garofano.
Witnesses: Billone Giuseppe, 41 yo,
Solano Antonino, 26 yo.
The baby was left to the declarant to be brought to the orphanage of Nicosia with a copy of the birth act and the listed cloths with which she was presented.
There is no indication of who was the declarant, often in these cases it was a midwife, but here it's said peasant, it could be anyone knowing the mother.
The reason for the mother to not give the name could be various, usually the parents were not married (and in this case they could marry later and legitimize the child; the list of cloths were useful to identify the child later) ;
or one of the two parents was married.

New record found! This record actually links the adoptive family (Schivone) that I was aware of directly back to Italy. My great grandmother was abandoned at birth and adopted by Nicola Schivone and his wife. The print on this record is very small and hard to translate. I believe it states that the female child was born nearby and was adopted from the foundling at age 3? Can someone translate and confirm that the child was found abandoned and the mother was never identified? Thank you.

This one is too great a challenge for me to translate, but it appears the child was three days ("giorni") old, not years.

In summary,
Dated 16 September 1893. Castelfranci.

Nicola Schiavone, 33yo, states that he found a newborn baby girl, apparently three days old, in front of his home today at 3:30 a.m.
The child was entrusted to the declarant at his request, who promised to feed and take care of her, as well as to respond to any requests from the authorities.
The newborn was given the name Giovanna and the surname Carofano.
