Leila

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

Leila is mostly an Arabic name, in Italy is not very common, it started to be used about in the 1960s-1970s among Italian people (before it was an extremely rare name), then its use declined during the 1990s; it is used also among immigrants of North African/Middle Eastern heritage.

The name was sent to me in an email.

Is Lella a full name or a nickname?

It's a nickname used for a variety of personal names (Carmela, Raffaella...), or even as a generic nickname, not deriving from the actual name.
