How to find a street address
Any thoughts on how to find a street address for a family living in Queens, NY c.1934-1940?
An index to marriage licenses lists a marriage license obtained by the couple in late 1934 in Queens, NY. The index doesn't have addresses. No marriage record has been found.
The couple had two children born in Queens (1937 and 1939) - and again, just index listings without addresses, and no birth records found.
The family is recorded in Staten Island, NY in the 1940 Census. The 1940 Census record indicates that the couple was living in the same place in 1935. I suspect that's a (common) error, although I suppose they could have been living in Staten Island while for some reason going to Queens to get married and have two babies. The husband's family was from Brooklyn, and the wife's family was from Manhattan. So, I assume they were living in Queens from the time they married and had two children until moving to Staten Island c.1940. The house they moved into was built in 1930.
I can't find relevant city directories or telephone directories for either Queens or Staten Island.

Can you post the marriage index listing you found for 1934?

The marriage license is dated 1934.
Their actual marriage might have been in 1935.

Re: How to find a street address
The NYC Municipal Archives now has an online database for births, marriages, and deaths that occurred in NYC.
Owing to the laws in NYC, it’s somewhat limited.
Births through 1909 only.
Marriages through 1949.
Deaths, I think through 1947.
I can’t post the link but you can find it by googling
Time Out NYC Municipal Archives
The article in Time Out magazine will take you to the link.
The database is very far from being complete.
If your relatives owned property in NYC, you can try using the NYC Department of Finance Database which is called. ACRIS.
You can search on ACRIS by last name and borough. Some records go back as far as the 1950s, but many do not.
I hope this information helps.

Give me the family’s names. You won’t get the birth records for the sons as they were born after 1909. The marriage certificate should come up.

I can’t seem to download the PDF file. I can look for this info for you. I live in NYC and use the databases I mentioned often.
I’d be happy to help.

Re: How to find a street address
I was able to download the PDF. No marriage certificate is coming up either by index number or last name. This is non unusual as not all of the marriage records are online.
Double check the ancestry listing. I have found that an index number for the groom and the index number for the bride have differed. Check both names in Ancestry for the index number.

Re: How to find a street address
I tried searching the marriage records for Brooklyn and Staten Island with no luck.
I did find an obit for Catherine who died in Avalon, NJ in 2008, widow of Steven Guarino, mother of deceased Madeline.
It was not unusual for Famikies from Brooklyn to move to Staten Island, in fact, they still do.
Perhaps Ancestry made an error by listing the marriage place as Queens? Mistakes have happened.
You could ask the Municipal Archives to do a search, of course, I’m certain that there would be a fee attached to same.
I’ll post again should I think of anything else.

Re: How to find a street address
I just checked Manhattan for the marriage certificate as it is not unusual for a couple to marry in the borough where the wife grew up. Nothing.
Now, again, NYC has been very very slow to add to the online Municipal Archives database so it might turn up later.
The other possibility is that they took a license out in NYC but married elsewhere in NY State, this was the case with one of my aunts.
Unless Catherine’s parents, Bridget and Bartholomew, lived in Queens in 1934, I’d be very suspect that the Ancestry data is correct.
I’d hang my hat on their living in Staten Island after the marriage.

Re: How to find a street address
Thanks a lot for searching.
Bridget (aka Linda) and Bartholomew lived in Manhattan until he died in 1919.
By 1925 widowed Bridget (aka Linda) had moved to Queens with her three daughters including Catherine (the bride) - first in Long Island City and then Elmhurst). Bridget (aka Linda) and Catherine (the bride) were recorded in Queens as late as the 1930 Census.
I also know for a fact that both of Catherine's children were born in Queens (1937 and 1939) - attested both by birth indexes and word of mouth.
So, it's very like Catherine was married in Queens, and settled there for a few years while having children. And then moved to Staten Island c.1940.
I was just wondering where they lived in Queens c.1934-1940 after marriage and before living in Staten Island.

Re: How to find a street address
Their address in the 1930 Census was 26-42 95th Street in East Elmhurst, Queens, NY.
Bridget (aka Linda) died in a Manhattan hospital in 1937 with home address as Astoria (Queens).
It's likely her daughter Catherine and husband lived with Bridget (aka Linda) until her death.

Re: How to find a street address
No promises as I had been ill for a couple of years which precluded me from traveling into Manhattan from Brooklyn but I am better now.
I’ll see what I can do to visit the NYC Municipal Archives in person to find what you are looking for.
Again, this might take a while

I couldn’t find Bridget’s death certificate in the NYC Municipal Archives database.
Why not try to obtain Sacramental documents from the Church where they worshipped in Queens? It can be done.
Where was Bridget buried?

She died under the name Linda Sullivan, buried in Calvary Cemetery.
