Favored Cousins

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

Favored Cousins

Post by darkerhorse »

It's only natural that we are closer to cousins of the same gender and of similar age.

My father favored his one paternal first cousin (female) over his 14 maternal first cousins. Among his maternal first cousins (both genders and wide range of ages) he was closer to males of his age.

My question is whether, among Italians, paternal cousins are generally favored over maternal cousins (because of male dominance or preference), and are surname cousins especially favored (because of shared surname)? I'd say that's so in my case.

I meant to mention that the closeness of my grandmother with her siblings didn't seem to factor in much on how close my father was with his cousins.

For example, my father didn't seem to necessarily favor cousins from my grandmother's favorite siblings (i.e., my father's uncles and aunts) though there was some overlap in that regard.
