Name on passenger list?

Post by lyn1982 »

The surname on this list here, on the right side, 6th one down, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... AQ235-SKG8 Is it Eppes as transcribed, or Ebbes, or something else?

This is the actual manifest https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse ... sePUB=true , I'll upload it below as ancestry requires a sub and I cannot find it elsewhere.

I'd like opinions especially on the first surname, I believe that is more likely to be accurate then the manifest, because if I'm understanding right the first list was actually compiled in Italy thus more likely to have gotten spelling and pronunciations correct.

They both look like Eppes to me.

The first list (alphabetical) was composed in New York by the Immigration service. See the cover page here...
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2299396

The manifest would have been compiled at departure port using travel papers the immigrant carried.

I agree that both lists show the surname as Eppes.

Ty both! I just found him in military records and am in search of his birth record now as they indicate birth in Rome. Tho sadly he was born to unknown parents according to the military record.

It's odd cause in America he went by Joseph Ebbo and later Joseph Abbo. But I know it's him as the info all matches perfectly.

The surname Epps, though rare, is found in Rome.

Thanks. I've found his birth actually and posted a topic requesting full translation as he was abandoned.

Can someone read the name of the passenger on line 13 of this document?

Ancestry.com transcribes the name as Ignacio Stramaniore.

He's joining the same person who in this case is referred to as his brother-in-law.

Ignazio Saccamore came over on the same ship with Giuseppe Eppes, also headed for Lyons, having left his wife Augusta at home, joining Pietro Mastracchio.

Tu ricordi?

Is your theory that they all knew each other and immigrated to the same area because your GGF had been placed with Straccamore families, and they knew your GGF's birth family was Mastracchio or perhaps just friends of the Straccamore family?

You could check passenger indexes to see if your GGF and Ignazio were in the same grouping.

Wow! Thank you for that. I would have never guessed I'd be back 5 years later finding out how significant that Straccamore passenger was.

"Is your theory that they all knew each other and immigrated to the same area because your GGF had been placed with Straccamore families, and they knew your GGF's birth family was Mastracchio or perhaps just friends of the Straccamore family?"

I have no idea cause there aren't really DNA matches to either - at least not strong matches. Theres an 8cm Mastracchio DNA match and a 14cm Straccamore DNA match - both matches do match 2nd cousins on the line though if that counts for anything.

I don't have an ancestry account to see exact relation - but the Straccamore could be a red herring - their tree is named "Battaglia family tree" and Battaglia is my ggf's wives mothers maiden name. Or it could mean that my ggf married his wife because they were cousins of some sort - that explains the oddity of him marrying a woman who was from Cerda in 1918. When I resub after Christmas I'll have to check their tree out more unless anyone has ancestry sub and wants to volunteer to tell me LOL.

Thanks. What does being in same grouping mean exactly? Both appear to be in 3rd class. For my GGF it says 113 - 1 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... n&groupId=

For Ignazio it says 113 - 13 and has another person under him directly whose says 113 - 15 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... n&groupId=

I'm not sure about the designations for passengers on a ship.
