Looking for info on my second great-grandmother

Post by trmullen02 »

Hello, I'm researching my second great-grandmother Madalena Bottino. She was born in 1885 or 1886 in Fagnano, Italy. I've debated which "Fagnano" she's from, but based on her husband's birth place (Samuel Vuoto, in Santa Caterina Albanese, Consenza, Italy), I think she's from Fagnano Castello, Italy. On a 1911 Pennsylvania Passengers and Crew List for the ship 'Verona,' she's listed as travelling with her mother Caroline and sister Amalia(married name being "Amatuzzi"). Caroline is recorded as living with Amalia and her husband in 1920 in Camden, New Jersey. Knowing little about Madalena's parentage has made it difficult to find birth records for her. If anyone can help, please feel free to reply to this post!

Hi,

Have you already seen this family tree? Are you one of the contributors?
https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/pe ... s/LYP2-HYG

There is a large group travelling from Chieti, Abruzzo.
Have you taken into consideration that region? There is a Fagnano Alto in the province of L’Aquila in the same region.
Do you know where Sinibaldo Vuoto and Maddalena Bottino were married?
According to the ship manifest present, Sinibaldo arrived in the States in November 1903 aged 18.

I've found the marriage of Amalia Bottino and Achille Amatuzzi in 1897 in Fagnano Castello:

Amalia was the daughter of Carolina Bottino and of an unknown father.

Though the record says that banns were posted on day Nov 28 and Dec 5, I can't find that in the volume

In the volume of 1881 Births there is no Amalia Bottino.
Yet, there are two foundlings who were named Amalia (#8 and 11).

One of them might have been recognized later by her mother.

I couldn't find any Maddalena born in Fagnano in the years 1882-1887.
Maybe she (or both) were born somewher else because of the "shame" that having children out of marriage was held to be.
