For the municipality of Lonato del Garda, the situation regarding online genealogical records perfectly reflects the rules of the Brescia province: digital availability is excellent for the early 19th century, but there is a complete gap for the period following the Unification of Italy.Your research will be divided into three specific historical periods:

1. The Napoleonic Period (1806 – 1815): Available Online. If you are looking for ancestors who were born, married, or died during this decade, the records are fully digitized and available online.
Where to look: On the Portale Antenati (State Archives of Brescia).
What you will find: The archives are cataloged under the historical heading "Lonato con Esenta e Venzago". You will find complete annual registers of Births, Marriages, Deaths, and their respective ten-year indexes.

2. The Restoration Period (1816 – 1865): Parish Only. For this 50-year block, no state-run civil registry exists online.Where to look: You must refer to the parish registers of the Basilica of San Giovanni Battista (the main parish in Lonato) or its hamlets (such as Esenta).
How to proceed: The historical books of baptisms, marriages, and deaths are kept in the local parish archives or centralized at the Historical Diocesan Archives of Brescia. Consulting them requires a formal request or an in-person visit.

3. The Italian Civil Status (from 1866 onwards): Municipality Only. Although the Unification of Italy reintroduced municipal civil registries, Lonato del Garda's records have not been digitized by the Ministry and are not available on the Portale Antenati (which only holds records for Brescia city during that era).
Where to look: The documents are physically stored at the Town Hall.
How to proceed: You can request certified extracts, full copies, or initiate a historical research request by contacting the Ufficio Servizi Demografici / Stato Civile (Civil Status Office) of the Municipality of Lonato del Garda. The municipality provides a Unified Electronic Helpdesk where you can find the specific section for "Domanda di ricerca storica negli archivi" (Application for historical archive research).

thanks. i'm familiar with the 3 types and time periods of italian records as i've been at this for 25 years, starting out with the microfilms at the lds libraries and working right up to the present with the lds online records as well as the www.antenati database. i'm long finished with my own paternal family lines in avellino and messina but try to keep my hand in the learning process. i often post queries for comunes not in my ancestral lines but for general knowledge. as experienced as i am i'm always looking for input from others and occasionally learn something new. theres no need to contact the registries as my queries are not for personal needs. but even when my research was exclusively for my own records research i had very little luck in written correspondence, particularly with church records which predated the 3 record types aforementioned. they rarely if ever responded. and unlike the 3 records issued by the comunes, which only involved knowing the comune of your ancestors origin, with the parish records you had to know the specific parish which contained the records you were seeking. this was much harder in a major city like rome or naples where there were hundreds of parishes, unlike small comunes which contained only a few or less.there isn't much i haven't experienced in my years of research and curiosity but i'm always trying to learn.
