The abbreviation is for Santa. I’m wondering if it’s referring to Santa Helena/Elena e Costantino. I see the first letter as an H in the record.
I’m going to post a link to the Wikipedia article about it. Will be right back.

From what I’m seeing online, the parish of Sant’Elena is in the historic district of Corleone and an easy walk to the parish of San Martino there.

I must admit I had found it, but thought it was not a Parish, as it is not listed here:

https://www.chiesacattolica.it/annuario ... LEONE&nome

but in the link Erudita provided, I see it actually was!

Hi Pippo

Actually, it was mmogno who initially found the parish in a list from the archdiocese of Monreale. The link that I was initially posting at the same time as him was for a Wikipedia article for a parish in the city of Palermo, and not in Corleone, with the same name. Then when I saw his link, I located the additional info about the parish in Corleone and edited my reply. Anyway, great minds think alike. Happy to see you back on the forum.

Erudita

*the link with the parish listed is in mmogno’s reply in this thread

In realtà ora non è una Parrocchia, ma una chiesa sussidiaria della Parrocchia di Santa Maria di Gesù. Era diventata Parrocchia nel 1636 e qui siamo nel 1638. Non so fino a quando lo sia stata.

Yes, I noticed that it showed that Sant’Elena was a subsidiary parish of Santa Maria di Gesu. Had never before seen this. I think it means that Sant’Elena did not have a resident parish priest, but that a priest did go there to say Mass and possibly for other religious reasons. So no marriages actually took place there? Maybe you have a more detailed understanding of what subsidiary means?

Thanks, G.

Erudita, where are you reading that Sant’ Elena was a subsidiary “parish” of Santa Maria di Gesu. I only see Sant’ Elena being referred to as a “subsidiary ‘Church’”.

My understanding, from my own Italian Catholic upbringing is that both the Church of Sant’ Elena and also the Church of Santa Maria di Gesu, belong to the same Parish with one “Parish Priest” (but there are possibly other Priests also connected with the same Parish but one Parish Priest who is/was basically the “Head”). I am understanding that the Church of Santa Maria di Gesu is like the “mother” Church, where most of the church services took place and that there were also Sunday Church services, baptisms, marriages, funerals etc held at Sant’ Elena (a subsidiary church). We had this kind of situation in the town I grew up in and also where I currently live, but not so much now as most of the “subsidiary” churches are being closed down due to lack of Priests.

This is my two cents here. I haven’t researched this, it just from my own understanding/experience.

Credo che anche nella chiesa sussidiaria possano essere amministrati i sacramenti, tranne il battesimo. In ogni caso i registri parrocchiali dovrebbero essere sempre quelli della chiesa madre, la Parrocchia.
