Di Matteo births Colesano, Sicily 1874, 1876

Post by Marlena »

Hello, I have two birth records for Di Matteo brothers in Colesano. Parents appear to be Bartolomeo Di Matteo, son of Giovanni and mother Illuminata Culotta, daughter of Giuseppe. Would you please verity the names are correctly spelled?

The first one in 1774 is Giuseppe Di Matteo. 2 Feb 1874, is this date correct or 1 Feb 1874? What does it say about Cefalu on the second page?

The other brother is Francesco Di Matteo 1876.

In Francesco's record the it says something I can't read after the mother's name, Illuminata____?

Is there anything else you can glean from these records that may help me find the birth of the father Giuseppe or the marriage of the parents?

Thank you very much, Marlena

Giuseppe was born 1 Feb 1874 (the birth was registered 2 Feb). His father is Bartolomeo, age 53, an animal mover (he used carts to transport animals), son of Giovanni. The mother is Illuminata Cuolatta daughter of deceased Giuseppe. They were not legally married (although they might have had a church marriage, but at the time that didn't count for legal purposes - you also needed to have a separate civil marriage).

Cefalu is only mentioned because Collesano was part of that sub-district within the province of Palermo.

In Francesco's record it says Illuminata is senza professione (no job). By this time they are apparently legally married.
