Here is an Update I found out. Any info on this would rock as well... Ok so my great grandfather Francesco or Frank D'Onofrio, was married in NY to Mary Guarino in or around 1916. At the time of there marriage she was 16 yrs old. She was born in the United Stated, I assume NY as well, and Her Parents names were Micheal and Michaelina Guarino. Michaelinas Maiden name being Carlo. They had other children that were born in Italy. I am unsure weather they left children behind or took them with when they moved to the USA. I am lookinginto where they are from... We think it is Sorrano, Serino, or Cerreto.

I will post more when I find more.

Thank you for all of your help!

Well.....it gets more confusing. No Francesco d'Onofrio born in Casacalenda in 1889...or 1883, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94 or 1895. Nothing, zip, nada.

There was a Giuseppantonio d'Onofrio born in 1890...but he died at 4 months. He had a brother named Domenico, born in 1884...but he died in 1892. Reason these were interesting is because the father, Pasquale, died in 1892 in his early 30's. No other male d'Onofrio child born in Casacalenda during these 15 years.....at least, none that I can find.

Interesting side note. There was a Francesco d'Opera born on 22 March 1889...he was the last of a set of triplets born that day. The first was Giuseppe, the second Domenico, and then Francesco. Their father was named Saverio and was 31. But he did not come from Casacalenda...there are very few d'Opera names in the birth records and all later in the 1800's. The mother was listed as Maria Angela Ciarla, age 20.

Now, Ciarla is a name from the town of Ripabottoni...and she is very young to have given birth with an older husband...this is just not done very often. Anyway, I could not find a marriage record in Ripabottoni, but I did find a birth of an Angela Maria Ciarla on 25 Jan 1872...a little younger then the birth records suggested, but we know how they vary. This Angela Maria is the daughter of Michele Ciarla, age 32 (and he is the son of Pietro Ciarla) and his wife, Antonia Maria del Vecchio, age 25 (daughter of Pasquale delVecchio.)

Making no claims about this...only that this is what I found associated with the date of birth listed...23 March 1889. It is possible that the date of birth is off...it happens a lot. But I am not sure what to do with the fact that there were so few males born into the D' Onofrio family for the 15 years I searched.

Don't know what to tell you. Thought that his father would be named Vincenzo and his mother possible Giuseppa...but nothing about this follows logic. Do you know if he became a citizen? You might find something there. You definately want to look for his marriage info...it might help with a different date of birth, or that he was adopted, etc....it might list his parents.

Not sure where to go next.....anybody out there have a suggestion?

this info seems dead on from the info that I recieved. He definately became an american citizen. now about his mother. I know that she had told him that his father had died when he was very young, so pasquale may have been his father. Is it possible that his birth wasnt officially recorded? Also his mother had remarried after the father had died. His step father treated him very poorly, partially the reason for him coming to the USA. My grandmother told me this info but thinks it may be a possibiliy that he was illagitimate, but that is hear say at this point. Do you know what pasquales wifes name was? Is there more info on him or possibly his wife and being remarried? also when it says image 299 what do they mean by that?

Thank you very much, this is being a huge help!

Let's go over what we have so far, some fact and some theory provided by your grandmother:

Francesco/Frank D'Onofrio
Born: March 23, 1889 in Italy.
Death: December of 1983 in New Jersey.

Marriage abt. 1916 in New York to:

Mary Guarino
Born: Abt. 1900 in New York
Death: ????

Children:
Vincent ( died young)
Josephine (married in NJ to a Delliacano)
Michelina (married in NJ to a Johnson)
Pauline ( married to James Kiesling)
Vincent (named for deceased brother)

According to 1920 POSSIBLE census, Frank immigrated in 1910 and naturalized by 1919.

His immigration HAS to be before 1916...otherwise, how would he have married Mary in 1916!!

Mary has a sister named Mildred Guarino who is still living in New York.

Parents of Mary are Michele/Michael Guarino and Michelina Carlo...
they may have had children born in both Italy as well as New York.

Does this sum it up?? Can you add any further facts??

This is a possible record for Michelina Carlo joining husband Michele Guarino in New York on December 23, 1898, and traveling with children:

Pasquale D'Onofrio was married to Maria Francesca Biello. They had twins in Feb. of 1888 so not sure she would be giving birth in March of 1889. Her twins died within 8 months of birth. There was another family of Raffaele D'Onofrio and wife Emanuela Pietrantonio also in the records, but I believe they had a baby girl in 1889 so sort of eliminates them.

If Frank's mother had an "illigitimate" child, it would have been after the death of the husband--and after 9 months of the death, otherwise it would carry her husband's name most likely. If she gave birth and she was the source of the surname D'Onofrio, it could have been in another town nearby. This would mean not recorded in Casacalenda, even if he was raised there and his parents came from there...births are recorded only in the town of birth.

Don't have marriage records to cover the period of time after 1892...never ordered them so I can't help with that. But even if a child is born out of wedlock, they are still listed in the records. That is why I was looking for another Francesco with a different last name born at about the same time and maybe adopted by a new father and using the new surname. Just don't have a clue here.

Now, look for those naturalization papers. There are two forms filled out prior to becoming a citizen: The Declaration of Intent and The Petition of Naturalization.

If Frank/ Francesco lived in Brooklyn at the time, look at these:

http://www.italiangen.org/databaselist.stm
and:
http://www.stevemorse.org/natural/naturalization.html

Search for D'onfrio by last name and first initial "F". Will give you all Franks and Francescos listed. Also the document numbers so you can request something. If you know about the date of naturalization, it would help narrow it all down. That is why we are trying deparetly to find him in the census. It will give a clue to when he arrived, sometimes how long he was married, info about naturalization. Will help narrow things down.

At this point, you have a lot of stories that appear to be making sense. But we need ONE record that we can prove is indeed him to work from. We have to have one actual FACT we can prove. I know you don't understand this desparate need, but it will help sort this out because this is not straightforward like other searchs...there is mystery here. So we need that one provable fact.

Even death records are hard because someone else ususally provides the info based upon what they think or have heard over the years...not always accurate with people born over a century ago when records were not so easily verifiable. My GGgrandfather is listed as being born some 10 years after his actual date of birth in the death records at the cemetery. Who ever gave the info did not know his true age.

That is why we keep bugging you about all of this. There is a Frank in the census who is listed as married to an Angelina who have a daughter named Josephine....but we don't know if Mary had a middle name she went by....do you see the problem? If we had a date of birth of the children, it would help. When was Josephine born? How about your grandmother? We need details, specific details. We may be able to track them in the census if we know one child's date of birth before 1930. Because nothing matches up so far, it is confusing, I know. But we have to try and work from there.

Are other relatives alive...you grandmother's sisters or brother? Get on the phone and call them. Your cousins, call them. Get something you can work with. Memory is good for adding interesting details, but stories have a life of their own...facts do not. So we need FACTS, HARD FACTS.

I will get back to the library probably tomorrow...it is not open everyday, all day. I will examine the records around that date and see what else I might be able to find....

In the meantime...DIG!

Have a great day... (yes you will survive this, it all takes time!)
