No doubt at all - the best place to live in Italy is near the lakes and the Alps. At somewhere between approx. 450m and 1000m (1500ft - 3300ft).
Views to die for. Heat in the summer, but cool nights so you can sleep. Sailing, windsurfing and other watersports - and snow nearby for winter sports too.
And believe me - the 'mountain food' is rib stickin' good!!!
Not to mention the art and culture in the North....
But you must have known most of this before you asked! Didn't you?

You CAN'T come here in Italy without see my region: Liguria....
Just to make you curious please give a look to these photos of my village, Sestri Levante
Every city or village is really wonderful, the only thing to remember is that it's a region full of tourists in Summer, the best period is spring or september.

How can you even think about leaving Chicago for other lands? Stay here, travel there. Buy a nice condo in Lincoln Park or on Lake Shore Drive with a nice view of Lake Michigan
