Ancestors from Casacalenda : Guastaferri & Armanno
Re: Ancestors from Casacalenda : Guastaferri & Armanno
John......
Your information and explanation are extremely appreciated. It explains things I was aware of, but had not really put together in a cohesive whole. Thank you for that.
I will be heading to the library in a little bit. But I wanted to comment on one thing you listed and Romeo referred to...the birth of Carmella in 1879. My problem is that in the birth records I saw, Antonio was 30 to 34 from the first child I found to the last in 1894. To have a daughter in 1879 as well is stretching his age a bit... If he was 34 in 1894, quite young in 1879 to be the parent of Carmella. Are we looking at a problem of age in the records of the parents? Not sure. But I will attempt to see if I can find anything out from other records.
Will order the film as well.
Back later if I get more.........

hi John, here a Giovanni Guastaferri from Casacalenda, born in the 1858, wife Maria Rosa in Casacalenda joining in Montreal at... trip of Dec 1918JohnArmellino wrote:My 3C4R was Giovanni Antonio Guastaferro (born circa 1858), son of Gaetano Guastaferro and Maria Carmela Coletta. Guastaferri is an alternative spelling. He married Maria Rosa del Cioppo (born circa 1856), daughter of Giuseppe Maria del Cioppo and Angela Maria di Zinno, on 04 AUG 1879 in Campobasso (CB). They had a daughter named Carmela who was born about 02 OCT 1879 in Campobasso (CB). They were still living in Campobasso as of 28 DEC 1887, when their daughter Rosa Angela (1882) died. They also had at least one other child, Gaetano (1884). Might this be your family? Could it be possible that they moved to Casacalenda sometime between 1887 and 1914? Casacalenda and Campobasso are not too far apart and there was a fair amount of interaction between the towns.

Re: Ancestors from Casacalenda : Guastaferri & Armanno
Hi Susan
Giovanni Antonio Guastaferro and Maria Rosa del Cioppo were married 04 AUG 1879 in Campobasso. As per the marriage record, he was 21 years old and she was 23 years old. Carmela was born about 02 OCT 1879, only 2 months later. Of course, many couples were married in a religious ceremony before they actually went to the comune for the required civil marriage, which was oftentimes right before the birth of a child.
The age variations in the birth records of an individual's children often vary wildly. The age of my 2GGF Donato Felice di Nonno varied by 23 years as per the birth records of his children! I find that the most accurate age (in the absence of a birth record) is the age reported on the marriage record.
I think that Giovanni Antonio was about 21 years old at the birth of his first child Carmela, which to me seems a reasonable age.

Re: Ancestors from Casacalenda : Guastaferri & Armanno
Hi Romeo
With the information that has been provided by all, I feel certain that our two families are, in fact, one and the same. Even if Giuseppe Guastaferri was a foundling named Armanno, it's quite clear that he was considered a member of the Guastaferri family and treated like a son by Giovanni Antonio.

We are 6C1R via Saverio Guastaferro and Anna Trotta. We share quite a few surnames on our direct lines: Guastaferro, di Tota, di Niro, di Nonno, Palladino, Trotta, Gammieri, Iannantuono, and Mancini.
The next time you are in Campobasso, you must dine at Tre Ponte on Strada S. Antonio Abate. It's owned and operated by your 6C1R Stefania Iannantuono. Or you might need a taxi - hire the white Mercedes that picks up near the Cattedrale and is owned and operated by your 5C Pasquale di Soccio. Or you might want a gelato at the restaurant at Villa de Capoa - that's owned and operated by Pasquale's niece and your 5C1R.
I wonder what we'll find with respect to Giuseppe's birth record.

Re: Ancestors from Casacalenda : Guastaferri & Armanno
Well......
There were so many people at the library I couldn't get copies of much of anything. However, here is a bit more that might explain what occurred.
Thanks, John, for the ages. It does make it easier to understand them being parents in 1879...particularly with her being a bit older then him.
It would appear, that most of the children died. I went to the death records and found this:
19 Sept 1891, at 8 months of age, death of Ida Guastaferro, daughter to Antonio Guastaferro and Maria Rosa Del Cioppo.
17 Oct 1892 (date of record) at 24 hours, Giovanni Guastaferro, son of Antonio Guastaferro and Maria Rosa Del Cioppo.
Next record, 17 Oct 1892 at 1 day, death of Gaetano Guastaferro, son of Antonio Guastaferro and Maria Rosa Del Cioppo.
Finally, on 20 Aug 1894 at age 6 months, the death of Asuntina Guastaferro, daughter of Antonio Guastaferro and Maria Rosa Del Cioppo.
All of the above, with the death of Rosangela and the first Gaetano and then the death of Maria Annanina in 1897...this is a family that must have really desired a child and would cherish it as their own. Seven of their children had died. No doubt your Giuseppe was greatly loved....as you can tell by the trips by his father to see him!
In addition, I found the wedding of Carmela to Luigiuol (looks like that, hard to read...will check again) Di Lalla on 29 Nov 1900. Luigi is 21, son of Nicola Maria Di Lalla and Maria Giuseppe Sciscento. Carmela is also 21, and born in CAMPOBASSO, living in Casacalenda and the daughter of Giovannantonio Guastaferro and wife Maria Rosa Rose Del Cioppo. So we do know that Carmella was a sister to Giuseppe, but maybe not by blood. This is definitely the same Carmella that John posted about earlier.
As luck would have it, I had already ordered that film we need and it should be here soon. As soon as it arrives, I will check for the birth of Giuseppe. He should be listed there if born in the town...or if found in the town. So Romeo, hang in there.....
John or Suanj, can you translate the name Ammano? Does it mean something like "man" or from "man"? If it does, it could indicate that it was a name made up by the Mayor of the town or something like that...it is not a name I found in any of the Casacalenda records for that period. Just trying to think where it could come from.....I maybe way off base here.
Back when I can get more.... I am sad for the family to have lost so many children. I have not seen that before in the records...where so many are lost.

Where are the proietti records transcribed in the Casacalenda records? Prior to 1866, they were entered in the diversi records in Campobasso. I'm not sure where they're entered after 1865.As luck would have it, I had already ordered that film we need and it should be here soon. As soon as it arrives, I will check fo the birth of Giuseppe. He should be listed there if born in the town...or if found in the town. So Romeo, hang in there.....
In Campobasso, by the late 19th century they were using variations of established surnames for proietti. For example, Angelillo was changed to Angelino. However, I have also seen some beautiful descriptive names, such as Cuoregiusto and Fiorebello.John or Suanj, can you translate the name Ammano? Does it mean something like "man" or from "man"? I have one mother in my database who had 12 successive stillborn children. It does make one feel for their pain and the difficult lives they often led.Back when I can get more.... I am sad for the family to have lost so many children. I have not seen that before in the records...where so many are lost.

Re: Ancestors from Casacalenda : Guastaferri & Armanno
John......
Actually, I am not sure about where they are located. I looked for the birth of an individual in Piani Crati......an "Esposito"...and he was listed and I believe without parents. Somewhere else I did see a birth record where parents were not known...assumed this to be a foundling. But I cannot be sure it was in Casacalenda. Maybe Ripabottoni? Name was made up if I remember correctly.
I shouldn't have assumed it would be in the birth records. Once they arrive, we will know more. Glad you caught the error!
Have a great one......

Re: Ancestors from Casacalenda : Guastaferri & Armanno
Hello again people
This week, I received a copy of my grandfather's marriage certificate. As I had previously stated, he married under the name Joseph Armanno. What I found interesting were the names he gave for his parents: Antonio Armanno & Maria Rosa Guastaferri.
What I find interesting about this is that one might have presumed that he used an alternate name to try and concele his true identity and/or origins for some reason. If that were the case, however, he certainly wouldn't state that his mother's name is Guastaferri ! Don't you think ?
And what about that Antonio Armanno ? Would that somehow be the name of his real father (Maria Rosa would have had a child outside of her family??) or maybe he just gave the name Antonio as being the one of his real father, but then falsely gave his surname as being Armanno simply to avoid having to explain why HIS name happened to be Armanno rather than Guastaferri ? Or maybe his natural father is really Antonio Armanno and Maria Rosa Guastaferri (del Cioppo) his adoptive mother ?
So many hyphotheses, so little facts... Still expecting that film on Casacalenda births, Esgee ?
Although, on that subject, there's another small detail that may or may not be of consequence. Still refering to that marriage license, Joseph gives as his place of birth: Campo Basso, Italy. City of Campobasso ? Or maybe he just gave the name of the province, thinking it might be better known to foreigners than Casacalenda ?
Anyone out here have access to birth records from Campobasso (circa 1897?) just on the outside chance there might be a Giuseppe Armanno born during that period ?
Thanks again, all.
Hope to read from you soon.

Re: Ancestors from Casacalenda : Guastaferri & Armanno
Hi Romeo
Perhaps the names of his father and mother were a result of confusion as to the exact relationship between the parties. It doesn't necessarily follow that he was tring to hide something. Assuming he was married in the USA, the authorities would not be familiar with the Italian infant abandonment system and wcould have been confused when Joseph Armanno tried to explain that his "father" was named Guastaferri. As to Maria Rosa, American authorities were likewise unfamiliar with the Italian custom of women retaining their birth names; hence Maria Rosa was assigned her marriage name, as is the custom in the USA.This week, I received a copy of my grandfather's marriage certificate. As I had previously stated, he married under the name Joseph Armanno. What I found interesting were the names he gave for his parents: Antonio Armanno & Maria Rosa Guastaferri. ...maybe he just gave the name Antonio as being the one of his real father, but then falsely gave his surname as being Armanno simply to avoid having to explain why HIS name happened to be Armanno rather than Guastaferri ? While he may have simply given the name of the province as his birthplace, I'll check the Campobasso birth records this week for any record of Giuseppe Armanno.Still refering to that marriage license, Joseph gives as his place of birth: Campo Basso, Italy.
