Mike, again..I think you may want to request your grandfathers birth act since you know where he was born. The birth act will provide the mothers maiden name and the fathers approx. age when Francesco was born. It may even provide additional details such as Antonio's father's name and whether or not he was living at the time of Francesco's birth and maybe even Sassia's fathers name and age. I know with my grandmothers it provided her first husbands name as well as her marriage date. Just make sure you ask for the full act and not the certificate..its provides more details!

Sometimes there are other notations on it as well.

Let us know once you get this info and we'll see how we should proceed.

Mike, sorry I hadn't got back to you in a long time. Hope you are still around. Go to Lombardifest.com. Send a message to Laura or Bryan and ask for a copy of the family tree. I don't seem to have it. You will probably learn a lot, or at least know where to start.

Pico was part of the Papal States and they did not start keeping civil records until 1873 or so. If you already know the names of your GGrandparents the birth record will not give you anything more.
Your next stop is the Parish church.

My GF was also from Pico. Italysearcher, would you know if there is only one parish church? If so, do you know the name or address?

The clerk in the Anagrafe office is called Francesco Carnevale. Did you not hear from him. I am sure we have had contact before.

Go to the left hand column and look for him in the members list and since he is fairly new it should be easy to see if he has furnished his e-mail address by descending date. =Peter=

From a very good friend Riccardo, I have found out that my Grandfather Francesco Carnevale was born on the 5th May 1874, his Father was Antonino & his mother was Sassia.
Antoninos father was Benedetto, and Sassia's father was Giovanni. We are now working on who my Grandfathers brothers & sisters were.

This may be worth looking into. The first Italian census was takenin 1871 a nd from that time to 1901 the census was inconsistent from region to region and usually on the name of the head of husehold, occupation and number of people in the household.Availability differs from comune to comune. You can write to the the Ufffico di Anagrafe in Pico in italian referring to the Censimenti for 1871 and see what kind of rsponse you get.

Italian form letters found at this website may be tailored for the censimenti 1871. Go to

I have been searching in this general area for years (but not Pico) and so far have not seen any evidence of a census in 1871.
