Another wee bit of history!

As Suanj said, most italo-scozzesi come from one of three areas in Italy. The two biggest groups of immigrants came from the areas around Barga and Picinisco. Your ancestor who came over in the 1880s would have been among the first big wave of Italians coming to Scotland. This first 'wave' of Italians into Scotland tended to be the ones that came from the Picinisco area - so I would hazard a guess that this is his area of origin. The immigrants from Barga generally came over a little later.

Many immigrants came into Scotland by the system of chain-migration - ie they were sent for by family or friends that had gone before. It is worth getting the microfilm of the 1891 census and carefully checking the surrounding households for family members. Parts of Glasgow were like a rabbit warren, and many many people lived in a small area. One tenement address can take up several pages of a census book, so don't just look at a couple of pages either side. Peter of course may have been among the first in his family to come, so there might not be any others.

Hi again

I have found the birth certificate of one of the children - John. It is listed under CASWILLI. He was born 16th October 1887 at 6 Little St Glasgow. He was illegitimate - which is why there is no marriage certificate. Parents were Peter Caswilli - ice cream maker, and Elizabeth McNamara - laundry worker.

Both parents signed the birth certificate with an 'X' - which suggests that neither could read or write very well. That probably means the surname has been written phonetically by the registrar. Does anyone know if there are any Italian surnames that maybe sound like 'casuelli'????

Hope that helps

Hi Laura

Yes - that must be a definite possibility. Caselli is another. Castelli, Casinelli, Casoli, Garzoli and Capaldi all show up on Glasgow certificates from the time. Unfortunately I can't find any information on either Helen, Peter or Elizabeth - only John. Sorry Susan!

Census returns for 1841 to 1901 are held by the General Register Office of Scotland. Consultation of most of the census records themselves is from roll microfilm, though the 1891 and 1901 census records can be viewed as digital images linked electronic name indexes. For the other censuses, visitors to New Register House will find street indexes for certain urban areas and a growing collection of privately produced census name indexes are available for consultation.

Indexes to the 1891 and 1901 censuses along with images of the original census pages are available on the Scotland's People website. This is a pay-per-view website which includes indexed digital images of the statutory registers of births (1855-1903), marriages (1855-1928) and deaths (1855-1953) for Scotland, the 1891 and 1901 Scottish censuses, and indexes to the 1881 census and the Old Parish Registers of baptisms and marriages.

Hi Susan

I've been thinking about other types of records that might shed some light on this elusive name! In Scotland, schooling became compulsory for all children under 13 in 1872, so Peter and Elizabeth's children must have been educated somewhere. The Mitchell Library in Glasgow has hundreds of the original admissions registers for schools. You mentioned that Elizabeth was a widow by 1901. Where was she living? Her children probably went to school nearby.

The other records that might be of interest are the applications for parish relief. If Peter had died by 1901 leaving Elizabeth to support the family by herself, she may have needed help. Parish relief applications are very detailed and fascinating, and occasionally list the names of the applicant, their parents and the dead spouses parents too. They might be worth a try. Any application would be likely to be listed under Elizabeths own name of McNamara as well as Peters name. I think Scottish law is like Italian law in that a woman keeps the name she is born with, and is only known by her husbands by tradition. These records are also found at the Mitchell. Contact -

Thanks everyone especially Marisa!

Haven't had much time to do anymore but when I am back in Scotland in July I will be will have access to more.

I found out Elizabeth was living in Dundee, fofarshire in the 1991 census and did not remarry (or marry) till 1908 so was on her own with about 6 kids so will try the parish relief and search schools in Dundee.

I will just keep trying

Peter Carswell - Pietro Casoli?

Hi everyone

Wondered if anyone can help me on where to look next. I think I have found my GG granfather Pietro from Italy, he died in Stirling Scotland aged 99 years old in 1939. His parents were Louisa Casoli and Joanna Casoli (nee Galeu/Galea). I know he was in Scotland in 1891 census which says he was born in Italy. So therefore trying to find when he came to UK and where he was born. Any ideas?

Certificate says 1939. The dates and ages don't match with census. Looks like he left his partner and she moved to Dundee with her children and says she was widowed but never married him in the first place.
