To recap the manifests...

1897 Manifest tells me

Vincenzo Piro is 36 born about 1861 :!:

Angela Tumminello is 36 born about 1861 :!:

Francesca age 6 born about 1891 :!:

Benedetto age 3 born about 1894 :!:

All from Monreale, off to New Orleans. :!:

Travels with a Salvatore Tumminello
-------------------------------------------------------------------
1903 Manifest tells me

Vincenzo Piro is 42 born about 1861 :!:

Angela Tumminello is 40 born about 1863 :?:

Francesca age 13 born about 1890 :!:

Benedetto age 9 born about 1894 :!:

Maria age 4 born about 1899

Lucia age 3 born about 1900

Carmela 11 months born 1902

All from Monreale, off to New Orleans. :!:

1903 Manifest also tells me that Angela Tumminello was also blind in one eye.

-----------------

Both given and surnames are identical.... husband and wife....

1903 manifest shows Angela as being younger by 2 years...

First 2 children on both manifests are a perfect match...

Destination is exact on both manifests...

:?:

We've seen forum members discover new siblings within their ancestral families...

Always remember... family tells you one thing, documents tell you another...

---------------

Lots of good help was offered to you... it can be confusing, overwhelming...

I do look for immigration info on the census records... but many times they are wrong.... and the info changes every 10 years...

I've only looked at the ships manifests throughout this post... still need to review the other info...

I thought that your grandfather, Benedetto/Benaisto Piro, had four sisters: Frances (1892), Mary (1897), Lucy (1900), & Carmella (1903)?

What was the name changed to in 1921? Do you have your grandfather & father on the 1920 census?

Edit>>My mistake....The 1920 for Benedetto has did posted.

I think Francis (Frances) is Francisca from the 1910 census & daughter to Vincenzo

I have my dad - Vincent Piro on the 1920 Census, Chicago, Illinois, father Bennett Piro - 26, Mother - Edna Piro - 26 - Vincent six months.
I have the 1910 Census Benaisto Piro 15 father Vicent mother Angela year of immigration 1894??? in that one he has 4 sisters which is correct.

I see where the confusion is..Yes Francesco is really Francesca who later. There is this manifest that confirms she is a female as the 1910 census does..

http://img110.imageshack.us/img110/8941 ... tomhx4.jpg

Nonna J, I resized it so it can be viewed easier. I guess theres not that mush difference with this one.. So the WW1 Draft Card for Francesco is most probably incorrect. About John Piro though...would Francesca aka Francsis have married a relative? Not unusual. Funny how the 1920 census refers to Vincent as a fatherinlaw to John and the 1930 census refers to him as his father.

Lagunasuz, I really think you need to research the films for your town to confirm things. Its the same families with some discrepancies but its them. I understand you're abit confused but not really sure why you're so convinced its not them.

Have you seen this manifest for Giovannni going to New Orleans? Immigration date almost matches the one on the 1930 Census (he claims 1908 and this is 1906). Giovanni is from Monreale as well. The person travelling with him on line 29 is going to see Vincenzo Piro his uncle..in New York.

First Name: Giovanni
Last Name: Piro
Ethnicity: Italy, So. Italian
Last Place of Residence: Mourenle
Date of Arrival: Jun 10, 1906
Age at Arrival: 18y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Gallia
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0030

http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 3122160207

The birth years match up to Johns birth year. I need other opinions here..

Try this link.... (link to direct manifest not working....)

http://ellisisland.org/search/viewTextm ... 3122160207

then hit the view original manifest button.....

(haven't looked at it yet....)

Maria

Further...

my opinion...
It's Giovanni on line 30 would be joining his uncle Vincenzo, not the guy on line 29... the guy on line 29 is off to NY I think....

I am not in Sicily, but in the New Orleans area. The Piro's were my father's godparents as best as I can remember. They were apparently his aunt and uncle on the Tumminello side. I knew Lucy Breaux as my father cousin and was in contact with her until the 80's. They had a grocery store in the third ward which later became a laundermat. Lucy must have died in her 80's or 90's. I also met Camille and Frances when they came and visited in either the late 60's or early 70's. I was amazed that they were driving at their ages at that time, especially in California.

I believe that Angelina was my grandfather's sister (Costanzio Tumminello). The Salvador Tumminello I believe to b my uncle. There was a large age gap between him and my father. The Piro's and Tumminello's apparently lived in the same block on Gravier Street.

I am so surprised to hear from someone on this site since I posted my request so long ago. Thank you so much for replying and so much has happened since I started looking for my family but you are a major find! We have no connections to any Tumminellos. I am so disappointed, my sisters and I were just in New Orleans for my grandmother's 100th birthday and everyone came, including members of the Breux family but there was no mention of any one knowing any Tumminellos, but I am getting in late into this family. I wish I had known and we really would have a huge family get together. It was a lot of people as it was and not enough time.I have to forward this information to them and perhaps you guys can meet in New Orleans and fill me in, I am so excited! Tell me more!

I did manage to find my family, not all but some, and it has been really fun and very interesting. The search was very difficult but with the help of this site and others I managed to find them. I thank every one for their help and for helping anyone trying to find relatives.

I am a Piro too! Vincent Piro (I think the 8 year old) was my grandfather. They lived in northern California. I remember his sisters Angela & Loretta. He also had a brother Nick, lived in New Orleans.
