Occhiuto Family

Post by AmyTillman »

Hello! I am researching the OCCHIUTO family and I need a lot of help. :)

I have a Thomas OCCHIUTO married to Veronica FARRAINA; they had five children: Frank Paul (b. 17 Jun 1896), Angela, Thomas, Antonio and Peter. Frank Paul OCCHIUTO married Rose Frances SCALISE. Her parents were Angelo J. and Josephine [JULIANO] SCALISE.

I pick them up in Pennsylvania in the US, but they were all born somewhere in Italy. I don't know where.

Any direction would be sooooo wonderful.

Thanks!

If you can post the US Census for them in Pennsylvania - it would help us a lot.

Meanwhile,
This looks like it could be the Frank Paul Occhiuto (born 17 June 1896) that you referenced.

Hello, T.!

Rosa's father's death death certificate.

https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/51 ... PUBJs=true

Place of birth: the hamlet of Angoli, comune of Serrastretta, Catanzaro, Calabria

Strong evidence that the Scalise, Juliano/Iuliano families were from the hamlet of Angoli, the comune of Serrastretta. I haven't been able to make the same connection for the Occhiuto and Farraina families.

Hi Biff! :-)

Just found manifest and posted above for Francesco... he was born in Cortale, Catanzaro.

But the only online records I could find for Cortale were births from 1825 - 1843 :-(
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... tale/Nati/

...and microfilm only extends to 1861

Great find, T.

I located a 1914 Philly manifest for an Antonio Occhiuto (indexed as Occhinto) going to Sheffield PA also from Cortale. Previously in US. LIkely one of Francesco's siblings.

Father Tommaso's 1908 manifest? Or just a strange coincidence?

HMMM... curious.
Seems like the correct one, but I can see what you mean.
Veronica Ferraqua, instead of Ferraina; Coltaro, instead of Cortale.
Second page has him joining his daughter, Antonia, in Scranton. Also lists his place of birth as Coltaro, Catanzaro... The only COLTARO I could find was Coltaro, comune of Sissa, Parma, Emilia Romagna ...
Sounds like it is probably him, just messy work by the clerk. :-)

There is another Occhiuto toward the bottom of the page. Possibly a sibling or cousin to Tommaso??
RAffaele Occhiuto, leaving father Giovanni in Cortale, joining cousin Antonio Occhiuto in Scranton.

Based on Angelo Scalise and Josephine (Giuseppa) Juliano/Iuliano's death certificates which show their birthdates as 1865 and 1862 respectively, it might be worth checking the marriage records for Serrastretta starting with 1860 and working backwards in the event that Angelo's parents, Gaspare Scalise and Felicia ?, and Josephine's parents, Domenico and Maria Arcari, might have been married prior to 1861. Even though it appears unclear whether records for Angoli during the period before 1860 were kept in Serrastretta, it's worth checking the link below to Jim Bianco's pre-unification records for Serrastretta. The indexes are in alphabetical order by the groom's first name.

EDITED to add: Checked banns back to and including 1850 and did not locate any records.

From a tree on Ancestry:

Far left: Mary Scalise; Far right: Tony Pulli Back row: Mary's parents-Josephine Juliano Scalise & Angelo Scalise. The other 3 girls are probably Rosie, Lena & Jennie Scalise. The younger man is Frank Ralph Scalise. I do not know who the man 2nd from right is.

In checking further, I believe Josephine Juliano's mother's surname was Arcuri not Arcari.

On a personal note,

My paternal great grandparents were Rosilia Mascaro, born on 9 Oct 1859, and Antonio Mancuso, born 5 Nov 1862, in the frazione of Polverini in Feroleto Antico which is just to the east of the frazione of Angoli. It's interesting that the frazioni of Polverini and Angoli are closer to one another than they are to the towns of Feroleto Antico and Serrastretta. My ggrandfather's sister Petronella Mancuso (1850-1917) from Polverini married a Pietro Scalise (1848-1933) from Serrastretta. I wouldn't be surprised if this Pietro Scalise was related to your Scalises.
