Searching Di Deo family from Abruzzo

Post by jdeday »

Hello,

My grandfather immigrated to the United States. His name is Dominic DeDay, our surname is believe to be Di Deo. I have found a Domenico Di Deo on a ship manifest showing he immigrated through the port of New York in 1910. I believe that my grandfather was born 8 Nov 1892 in Palmoli, Province of Chieti, Abruzzo, Italy (Provincia di Chieti). The manifest indicated that Domenico was visiting his uncle in New Britain Connecticut.

I need help confirming that the Domenico on the manifest is my grandfather?

Who was his parents?

Who was his Uncle he was visiting?

Do I have distance relatives in Italy?

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Are you the same Jeffrey DeDay who has a family tree on Ancestry? If so, it appears you have a lot of information already, including his parents' names: Francesco Di Deo and Filomena Barattucci. His birthday, according to Stato Civile records, however, is not 8 November 1892 but 5 November 1893.

The manifest with your grandfather’s information has two pages. The second page names his uncle: Pasquale Lamanda. His mother is listed as Filomena and the age fits, so it is extremely likely that it is the same Domenico as in the birth record from 5 Nov 1893.

Also, note on the first page of the manifest that there is a verification for naturalization annotation. The date is given, but the reference number is likely useless. You would probably need an index search to be performed at USCIS before requesting the A-File or other naturalization information. Usually these files are a wealth of information, but not always. You're looking at a $130 investment, but it is often worth it in my opinion.

As far as distant relatives are concerned, that will require much more research. But the research is (more than) half the fun!

Thank you for your help. Yes I am the same Jeffrey DeDay on Ancestry.

Regarding the ship manifest, he entered through the port of New York but I can't find any info regarding him when I do a recored search at Ellis Island, why is that?

I have a Naturalization Certificate that list his date of naturalization as August 5, 1946 which is different than the date on the manifest???

Kind Regards,

Jeff DeDay
