Info on Giuseppe Castelbuono and Parents

Post by DanielaL1981 »

I am trying to find out more info on Giuseppe Castelbuono and who his parents are. The only information I know about his parents are, His mother had an affair with a servant and due to the affair Giuseppe was given the name of the town, Castelbuono, so his parents family name are different.

Giuseppe married Paola Sclafani and together had ten children, Ferdinand (My Bisnonno, born 1885), Antonio, Salvatore, Eugenio, Modesto, Rosa, Cira, and three other children I have not found out there names yet.

Giuseppe was a nobleman in Monreale and became a wealthy man in Bolognetta. He also ran transportation to Palermo in the late 1800’s.

Any info would be great!

It would be very unusual for a baby with no legal parents (parents were not married) to be given a surname of the town where he was born. Surnames were assigned by the town clerk. There are many posts on my website covering this topic. Even if he technically wasn't abandoned, that is, he was registered and returned to his mother, the legalisties had to be followed. Why did his mother not 'recognise' him legally at some point, and give him her surname?
There are lots of questions in this story.

In the birth records for Ferdinando and Rosa, Giuseppe Castelbuono is listed as a farmer.

Here are the birth acts:

Ferdinando

Rosa

For daughter Cira, his profession is listed as "rural" (campestre)

I have searched for the marriage of Giuseppe Castelbuono and Paola Sclafani in Bolognetta (formerly Ogliastro) without success. Some years are missing.

EDIT TO ADD:

I believe this is the birth act of your Giuseppe Castelbuono in Ogliastro (today is Bolognetta) in 1855.

#75 - dated 16 November 1855 in Ogliastro at the town hall.
Before the official appeared Francesca Lombardo, 40, midwife residing in Ogliastro, to present a male child who she declared was born to Rosa Giannino Castelbuono, age 18, residing in Ogliastro, and to Ferdinando Castelbuono Esposito (the "esposito" may refer to Ferdinando being an abandoned child) age 28, laborer residing in Ogliastro, on day 15 of November at 6 PM at home.
The child was given the name Giuseppe Antonio Castelbuono.

Giuseppe appears to have followed the Italian naming tradition. He named his first daughter after his mother, and his first son after his father.

Birth act of Giuseppe's mother, Rosa Giannino, in 1838. Her father Vincenzo was a farmer.

AND...
Here is the marriage act of Giuseppe's parents Ferdinando Castelbuono Esposto, and Rosa Giannino, in 1855 on 30 January.
#3
Dated 30 January 1855 in Ogliastro, Province of Palermo.
Groom: Ferdinando Castelbuono Esposto, unmarried, age 27, born in Palermo, countryman, residing in Ogliastro, son of unknown parents.
Bride: Rosa Giannino, unmarried, 17, born in Ogliastro, residing there, daughter of deceased Vincenzo Giannino, and of Carmela Lo Faso, residing in Ogliastro.
Church celebration of marriage on the same day.

Wow, thank you so much for all this great info. It seems his father does have the same last name as him. I am going to see where my cousin heard he did not share a name with either of his parents.

You are very welcome!

You might also have noticed that Giuseppe's father, Ferdinando, is the person who was given the surname Castelbuono by the official because his parents were unknown.

Ferdinando died in 1906, in Bolognetta. I located him in an index, but the 1906 death acts are not available online. He is listed as "di N. N." which means he was the son of unknown parents.

Ferdinando was born in Palermo according to his marriage act.
He was a laborer, not wealthy by any means.

In 1900, on the birth act of his son Giuseppe - Giuseppe Castelbuono is listed as a farmer.
But on the 1902 birth act of his son Antonio, Giuseppe is listed as "industrioso" which means he was a manufacturer or trader.

Giuseppe was born in Ogliastro (today called Bolognetta), not Monreale or Castelbuono.

Family stories can become muddled over time. :-)

Thank you, I am going to let my cousin know the story he heard is not about our great grandfather Ferdinando but most likely about our 4x-great grandfather. I really appreciate this info. Makes a lot more sense.

Where did you pull this info from? I want to start looking for my Great grandmother, Rosalia Di Fresco (my great grandfather, Ferdinando wife)
