Question about Derivative Citizenship

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Question about Derivative Citizenship

Post by Patrizio »

Hello all. I'm looking to see if derivative citizenship occured with regards to my past Italian ancestors when they immigrated to the United States.

My great grandfather (gen 4) came to the United States in 1910 (he was 20 years old). He went back and forth to Italy and eventually naturalized as a U.S. citizen after my grandfather (gen 3) was born, around 1930. He has his own naturalization papers and went through the process independently along with his wife (who was also from Italy).

His father (my great-great-grandfather) (gen 5) came to the United States by himself in 1890 and naturalized in 1898. His wife remained in Italy, along with her son (my great grandfather, gen 4, from the previous paragraph) up until his arrival in 1910. I have his (gen 5) naturalization documents from 1890 and nothing lists his spouse or his family.

Did my great-great-grandfather provide derivative citizenship to my great grandfather, even though he's not on any of the naturalization documentation, he was in Italy until he came to the U.S. at the age of 20, and had his own naturalization process years later?

Thank you for the help.
