Nationality on Passenger Manifest

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Nationality on Passenger Manifest

Post by qualdom »

Would a naturalized person ever continue to list "Italian" as their nationality on a passenger manifest?

Could it be safely assumed that the person never became a US citizen? The person in question had lived in the USA for a total of 9 years prior to this particular arrival.

In the passenger manifests from my ancestors, they list US citizenship and the naturalization date. My 2x great grandma, when she accompanied my 2x great grandfather had "by marriage" listed next to her name. Not sure if they all are like that, but I think it's a good sign if someone still listed Italian 9 years later.

Could go either way. Best to find corroborating information.
