I'm looking for info on how to contact the orphanage my great grandfather Joseph Abbo born Giuseppe Eppes was placed in as a baby.

This is what RLW translated for the record years ago:

Pietro Vespasiani presented an infant born 6 Dec 1895 at the hospital at Via Laterano at 4:50 pm to unknown parents and it was given the name Giuseppe Eppes. The child was sent to the orphanage of Rome's director with a copy of the birth record. Witnesses Giuseppe Barabini, 28, and Giovanni Spadoni, 28.

Where/What is the orphange of Rome's director and how do I contact it? Can I message in english or will I need help writing my query? I would prefer to contact them via email if possible.
I know it says unknown parents, but there is no way that he didn't later find out who his parents were. I have tons of dna matches to Agrigento and several dna matches to decedents of the brother of this man here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:7N6J-KPN2 , born in Porto Empedocile and died in Rome. I probably have matches to the other siblings lines too, but I cannot yet find who any of them married, nor marriage record of Giuseppe Martorana and Assunta Mazza.
Reason I say he had to have known who his bio family is is he immigrated to and lived in Lyons, NY for 2 years there are decedents of Marullo's which is another surname from PE that I have strong dna connections to that settled there. Lyons was a very small town so it can't be a coincidence.
IIRC Joseph did put unknown parents for his military draft in Italy. But, when he married he put father Dominico and mother Maria Parisi on his marriage and other documents. I think he may have also been related to the family that I believe took him in the Mastracci family from Alatri who lived in Rome. He was heading to one of them in his manifest and he gave nearly all of his children the same names as they did. My guess is that when he was a very young child someone in his biological family took him out of the orphanage. I think at some point he came to know who both his parents were. Why his name was not changed though I have no idea. Ether way, I'm to assume the orphanage would have kept a record of who took him out and whether there was any relation what it was.
I don't know of any ancestors from Giuseppe Martorana and Assunta Mazza and I'd like to contact orphanage before shifting through all the records for birth, marriages etc. I don't even know whether to look in Agrigento, Porto Empedocile, or Rome. Because this Giuseppe was born in PE and died in Rome and I have dna matches to his brothers childrens decendents, I am confident my great grandfather comes from either their line or a sibling of his Giuseppe's who may have sent his or her daughter or granddaughter to live with him in Rome after she became pregnant.

Do you mean ancestors or descendants?
By the way, you've gotten fewer replies than "Origins of Lasagna" so far.

I see that. Guess no one knows how to contact them? My translation request is still waiting too. ;(darkerhorse wrote: 21 May 2024, 20:15 I don't know of any ancestors from Giuseppe Martorana and Assunta Mazza and I'd like to contact orphanage before shifting through all the records for birth, marriages etc.

I meant decedents. I have Giuseppe's parents and on his Martorana line up to his great great grandparents. Don't have Assunta's yet but I don't know where to look for their marriage yet. I only know I relate because someone on ancestry has a family tree filled out with decedents of Giuseppe's brother and I have a bunch of dna matches leading back to him. Sadly nobody has any info on Giuseppe or the other siblings decedent's or who they married.

Contact the Archivio di Stato di Roma (State Archive of Rome) for official records. They might hold orphanage admission logs or civil registry documents.
