Help With Colorized Building Photos

Post by darkerhorse »

I'm doing some genealogy research for a friend who is in his mid-80s and infirm. I want to include colorized photos of residences where various of his ancestors lived in New York City (including all 5 boroughs) between 1910 and 1950.

Tessa78 has found a very useful website with tax photos of buildings c.1940 which is much better than contemporary photos since many buildings have changed so much or have disappeared since then. (I suspect "78" refers to her birth year rather than her age. Or maybe there's 77 other Tessa's in this Forum.)

Anyway, the website is:
https://1940s.nyc/map#13.69/40.7093/-73.99397

I've already captured a handful of buildings but I still have 17 to go! Both sides of his family were very mobile. I thought I would post three of the buildings for starters, to see if anyone wants to help so I can get the results to my friend quicker.

The catch is that each the building photos are black and white, and any given user can do only one colorization per day. (You may be able to colorize more than one per day if you use different browsers.) As I work through the list I would post more. Of course, I'll continue to capture one building daily on my own.

I know it’s a lot to ask, but I figured I’d put it out there and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Here are the first three buildings, all in The Bronx.

375-377 East 159th Street
https://1940s.nyc/map/photo/nynyma_rec0 ... -73.915187

1928 University Avenue
https://1940s.nyc/map/photo/nynyma_rec0 ... -73.912191

1793 Montgomery Avenue
https://1940s.nyc/map/photo/nynyma_rec0 ... /-73.91717

After clicking on the link and a page comes up, there's the building photo and a corresponding street map. Click on "Start Exploring" in the middle of the page to get rid of the green box. Make sure it's the 1940s photo, not the 1980's photo (option on top of building photo). Next, hover at the bottom of the building photo and click on colorization. I couldn’t find a way to save the colorized photo so I did a print screen of the whole page (building and map). Hopefully, you can save the print screen image in some format that can be posted here.

Thanks.

Put the Black and White photos on Ancestry.com and you can colorize all of them quickly, plus keep both the black and white photo and the colored photos if you so wish. Not a perfect system, but overall pretty good. However, it does require a subscription. You can colorize any black and white photos including photos of people.

Thanks! That helps me a lot. Boy, those buildings look bleak even in color. I'll do my turn and then I might post some more in case you or someone else is up for it.

Note: I was able to capture four more colorized building photos on the same day using four different browsers.

I still have about 10 more to go, including the three new ones listed above (which I'll leave available for any Good Sicilian, I mean Samaritan).

I did 5 more today and then ran out of browsers, reaching my daily limit. I'm now just 1 short of the 17 building photos I wanted to colorize.

Here's the last one:
51 Giffords Lane in Staten Island:
https://1940s.nyc/map/photo/nynyma_rec0 ... /-74.15049

You already qualify for acknowledgment. One more before tomorrow and you could get co-authorship.
