Seeking Great-Grandparents Pacelli & Donofrio

Post by Tyrisell »

Seeking information on my Paternal Great-Grandparents family lines: Antonio Pacelli & Angiolina D’Onofrio. Little is known of either, other than that they immigrated from Italy and have records that place them as being from Solopaca, Lopopaca, and possibly Capri, Italy.

• Paternal Great-Grandmother: Born Angiolina Nicola D’Onofrio on March 22, 1886 in Solopaca, Italy. She had a sister named Julia D’onofrio. We believe the parents to be Vincenzo D’onofrio & Adelaide Rillo-Donofrio based on US Immigration records & death records of both sisters. Angiolina married Antonio Pacelli sometime between 1903 and 1911. She traveled to the US in 1911 with her new husband and they settled in Chicago, IL and had their first child Robert in 1912. Daughter Consiglia (“Cecelia”) in 1914, Daughter Teresa in 1916. Son Vincent in 1920, and Daughter Adelaide (“Addie”) in 1921. Angiolina went by several names in documents found including: Angelina, Angela, Angiolina. Surnames spelled D’onofrio, Donofrio and Onofrio. She died at the early age of 35 in 1921 and is buried in Chicago, IL.

• Paternal Great-Grandfather: Born Antonio Pacelli on February 6, 1879 in Lopopaca, Italy. First documents account for him traveling in November 1903 to New York aboard the ship, “Perugia”, where the immigration logs state that he was traveling to visit his Brother-in-Law, “Pasquale Romano” (husband of his sister, Consiglia Pacelli-Romano) who resided in Gloversville, NY at that time. At some point he traveled back to Italy, married my Great-grandmother, Angiolina, and returned to the states with her in 1911 to settle and raise their family in Chicago, IL.

In 1921, after his first wife’s death, he traveled back to Italy where he married his wife’s younger sister, Julia. It was reported that she was very unhappy with the arrangement and thought Antonio to be “too old” for her. He remained married to Julia until his death in 1940 and buried with his wives, Angiolina and Julia, in Chicago, IL.

• Julia D’onofrio was born on May 23, 1897 in Solopaca, Italy. To our knowledge, her only sibling was her sister, Angiolina – but that hasn’t been confirmed. Once she arrived back in Chicago with her husband, Antonio sometime in 1921-1922, she helped to raise her nieces & nephews as her own. After Antonio’s death, she married again to a man by the name of Armido A. Alberton (b. 1879-d 1973.) I do not believe she bore any natural children of her own. Julia herself passed away on October 16, 1979. She is buried alongside her first husband, Antonio Pacelli in Chicago, IL.

Thank you in advance for any leads or information you might be able to provide. Hoping for residences, birth/baptism/marriage/death/burial details, etc. This side of my family tree has been elusive for the past three generations and I am hoping to locate some tangible leads so that I might continue my genealogical research.

New information: It appears there WAS another sibling of Angiolina and Julia D'Onofrio. There is a hand-written account from my grandmother that states that after Angiolina passed away and Julia came to act as step-mother in Chicago, that Julia was regularly "sending parcels to Italy to her nieces, who I believe were very poor". This leads me to believe there is another brother or sister who remained in Italy. Thank you again!

Could it be that your GGF Antonio Pacelli returned to Italy in 1924, rather than 1921?

Here is his US Passport application dated 28 February 1924.
On it he states that his birthdate is 6 February 1879, and that his father is deceased (in Italy)
He has resided in US from 1902 - 1924 in Chicago. Naturalized 17 February 1922 in Cook Co. Superior Court.
He is going to visit relatives...
On the second page is a photo :-D and physical description of your GGF!

Page 2- left side of image

EDIT TO ADD***

The arrival of Giulia D'Onofrio Pacelli on the SS Providence, 4 June 1924, states that she is leaving her mother Adelaide(?) Rillo in Solopaca, Benvenuto. She is the wife of a US Citizen, but it was ordered that she be manifested as an alien... so she appears in two places on the ship manifest.
He destination, with her husband Antonio Pacelli, is 1513 West Grand St., Chicago.
Her place of birth is listed as Solopaca.
Here is the link to her listing as an alien...

There are 22 listings in the Italian phonebook in Solopaca for D'Onofrio

It IS possible, and quite likely! GGF Antonio Pacelli's first wife (& Julia's sister), Angiolina, passed away in 1921. The accounts, as told by my ailing grandmother, were that he had discussed "at great length with my Aunt about what to do now that [her mother] had passed" and that "it had been suggested by [Aunt Consiglia Pacelli] that he travel back to Italy to seek the hand of a marriage to the younger sister, Julia.

I had not seen her name spelled in that manner, but that is an excellent clue! Thank you so very much for the information! This is tremendously helpful! :D

Are you looking for information going backwards or anything about the entire family line? They're my great-grandparents also. If you don't have photos, their pictures are on their headstones in Chicago. I'm curious to know who you are. Would love to exchange information with you...

Hi LittleItaliana! Nice to "meet" you. My father sent me email informing me that you were here and had replied to my inquiry. Yes, I am working backwards - and with very little information. I have a book that my grandmother had written in, detailing history, but there are very little dates or facts to go on. I do already have the images from the headstones in Chicago and I also frequent Ancestry.com. I've sent you a personal message with details on how to reach me. :)

Here is another son - named Salvatore - who was born to Vincenzo and Adelaide in 1890.
It would appear that the Salvatore whose birth marty :-) posted above had died sometime before this birth.

Salvatore D'Onofrio was born 14 June 1890, and married on 1 February 1912 to Lucrezia Fusco.

Being new to genealogy, I find this other Salvatore a mystery. Is it normal to have named a child after one of the same name who passed away?

And thank you Tessa, Marty, and all others who are helping with this. I am over the moon excited to be able to share this with my father! I wish I spoke Italian so that I could read and understand everything I'm seeing in full!

These are great though! I love all the help! <3 :D
