researching relatives

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

researching relatives

Post by patriziaantonietta »

Hello,
i am trying to find out about my Grandmother's brother who emigrated from Italy to New York after 1919 (I have got a photograph of him as soldier in Italy at that time).
His name was Vincenzo VECCHIO and was born in Bisceglie (Bari), probably in 1897. I think to have found out his registration form at his arrival in NY in November 20, 1920, when he was 23 yrs old, unmarried (Ellis Island Data Base). I know that he married later and had at least 7 children (6 female and 1 male, as per an old family picture; I know just 3 names of them: Carmela, Maria and Marino). Probably he died in 1983.

How can I find out more informatio about him and his family in the USA?
Thank you in advance for your help and kind regards.

Hello Tessa 78,
You've got it!!! Thank you very much :D , your research has been very helpful to me!
Do you think it would be possible to find out other info about the family story after 1930 (i.e. younger children's names and birthdates)?
Kind regards,
Patrizia

Hello Patrizia,
Do you think it would be possible to find out other info about the family story after 1930 (i.e. younger children's names and birthdates
You would have to search newspapers records (obituaries, birth announcements, marriage announcements) in the area they lived.
EDIT:
I found this possible death record for Vincent/Vincenzo. The birthdate is the same as the one provided on the Petition for Citizenship...
First Name: Vincent
Middle Name:
Last Name: Vecchio
Name Suffix:
Birth Date: 11 September 1897
Social Security Number: xxx-xx-xxxx
Place of Issuance: New York
Last Residence: Bronx, New York
Zip Code of Last Residence: 10458
Death Date: December 1971
Estimated Age at Death: 74

OR - you can wait for the 1940 US Census, which will be released (but not yet digitally indexed) in April of this year! :-)

Hello Tessa,
Thank you very very much for your help and suggestions to my research :-)! I can now give a name and a piece of their story to relatives I knew just by face on some old pictures. I think I can wait for the 1940 US Census to find out news about the last two doughters (one of them called Maria). If you have useful links/news for my research, please be so kind to contact me again.
Ciao!

Hello Pat,

Try www.newspaperarchives.com. You can search there for free on a limited basis. Also genealogybank.com has newspaper articles. They have free trial period. Both have been very helpful in finding information on family in the US.

Thank you Michelle! I'll check those links you suggested me. In the meantime I tried to find out further info checking the 1940 U.S. Census Record, that is now available on line, but unfortuately I couldn't manage it... Can you or Thessa be so kind to help me one more time? I'd be very grateful to you :)

Hello! I tried several times to find Vincenzo Vecchio and his family on the 1940 U.S. Census Records, through the 1930 U.S. Census data, but there was no way to find them. Maybe they didn't live in NY any more? In that case, how can I search them, as it's not possible by name yet. Another question is how can I find the last name of Filomena before she married?
Thanks

Here is a tutorial for the 1940 Census that MAY help...
http://stevemorse.org/census/quiz.php

As for Filomena's maiden name... You would probably have to find a marriage record for them in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1922 (as per the Petition for Citizenship filed by Vincenzo)
