Hi all,
I have a medal commemorating the Messina Earthquake of 1908 that was given to my great grandfather. In the aftermath of the earthquake it was decided by the Italian Royal family that a 'merit medal' would be produced to be awarded to those who distinguished themselves whether by rendering assistance and medical treatment, or by donating health and administrative services and meeting the material and spiritual needs of the sufferers of the disaster.
My great grandfather served in the army at the time and I am trying to find information on any lists of who the medals were give to, to see if his name is on here and any details in what capacity he may have helped. I am also interested to see if his army division may have been sent to Messina to help with the disaster.
He was stationed with the 54th reggimento fanteria, mandamento di Nicotera, distretto militare di Catanzaro of at the time and possibly the 89th as he was transferred around that period.
If anyone has any information or research on the earthquake or links that can help I would be grateful.
Description: silver 32mm diameter with a ring suspension: Obverse; the bust of King Victor Emanuel III with the legend 'VITTORIO EMANUELE III RE D'ITALIA'. Reverse; the inscription 'MEDAGLIA COMMEMORATIVA -- TERREMOTO CALABRO-SICULO 28 DICEMBRE 1908 ' all within an oak wreath.

You might want to follow the suggestion given by Erudita to your earlier post...lentini wrote:Thanks but does not say much on the individuals.
T.I suggest you contact the native town to see if it has a list of individuals from the town who were medal recipients. There may even be a monument in the town with a list of the individuals on it.
Re: Messina Earthquake Medal 1908
I tried that. This is why I posted asking to see if someone else knew any more information. Do you have some sort of issue with me re-creating a new post ? Does not really help that you keep referring me to an old post which I obviously worked on.

We are always ready to help, but also appreciate knowing what has been done in a search so we do not duplicate efforts.
