Stagnitti ancestors in Catania
I am have been searching for ancestry ties and I have found that when my grandfather came to America our last name was changed. I am interested in finding my family in Italy that I am certain is still there. I do not speak the language and I am hoping that this doesn't hinder my attempts.
I have documents that show that my grandfather travelled back to Italy in 1958 to visit his mother and father, Rosaria Massimino and Joseph Stagnetti. I know that my grandfather had siblings, which I am sure are deceased by now.
I am really grateful for you reading my post. This means a whole lot to me and my children. I wish to one day connect all of my branches in my tree.
Much happiness and peace

Catania is both a comune and a province. Was your GF's family from the town of Catania?
Do you have his arrival manifest?
Perhaps if you give us some details (name of your GF, approx. year of birth, name of wife/children, and where in USA he settled) we can help you search for family in Italy.
Throughout Catania Province you will find the following spellings: Stagnitti, Stagnitto, Stagnitta
For Stagnitti, here are the listings in the Italian Phone Book in Catania Comune

A Connecticut Military Questionnaire on Ancestry shows place of birth as Castiglione di Sicilia:

Yes, Biff , I agree that place of birth is Castiglione di Sicilia.
It was misppelled, but recognizable on his WWI Registration Card.

Unfortunately, the familysearch records for births in Castiglione begin with 1894!
However, there are currently 8 listings in the Italian Phone Book for STAGNITTI in Castigliione di Sicilia.

Should you wish to write to one or more of these "potential" relatives...

Thank you! It is my uncle who updated familysearch.org. I will ask my mom to try to make contact, she speaks the language and can explain the family matter.
Thank you for the information.

Re: Stagnitti ancestors in Catania
As mentioned previously, pre-1894 records for Castiglione di Sicilia are not currently available on FamilySearch. However, I was still able to find the birth records of some of Michele Stagnitti’s siblings (children of Giuseppe Stagnitti and Rosaria Massimino/Marcimino):
- Francesco Gaetano Stagnitti; born on May 11, 1894. Married Lucia Brunetti/Brunetto on October 28, 1920. Record (#114): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=2043496
- Carmela Stagnitti; born on May 8, 1896. Record (#136): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=2043496
- Concetta Stagnitti; born on August 30, 1898. Record (#229): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=2043496
- Salvatore Stagnitti (listed as Stagnitta); born on February 17, 1901. He probably passed away before 1908. Record (#53): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=2043496
- Rosa Stagnitti; born on April 11, 1903. She passed away on March 6, 1905.
Her birth record (#121): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=2043496
Her death record (#21): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=2043496
- Rosa Stagnitti; born on March 2, 1906. Married Carmelo Puglia on April 17, 1926 in Castiglione di Sicilia. Record (#74): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=2043496
- Salvatore Stagnitti; born on June 12, 1908. Married Carmela Bartolillo on October 6, 1952. Record (#168): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=2043496
Some additional information: Giuseppe Stagnitti was born in about 1860/1861. Also, Rosaria Massimino’s last name was listed as “Marcimino” in numerous records. I hope that my eyesight is not failing me…
I hope that this information helps! If you have any questions, please let me know!

Re: Stagnitti ancestors in Catania
That's so interesting!! I have records stating that a Joseph Stagnitti is my GF, Michael Stagnitti's father - where you show a Giuseppe. I also am very thankful for the see an additional name for the Massimino family.
I need to make sense of all of this. I am unsure of what to do about this new information on my GF.
This website is so incredibly helpful!
Thank you so much!!

Re: Stagnitti ancestors in Catania
Well I attempted to make my first post (a long one) to this forum, but it disappeared when I submitted it. Here is the short version: Your great grandparents were Giuseppe Stagnitti and Rosaria Marcimino. His parents were Michele Stagnitti and Angela Mangano; and her parents were Francesco Marcimino and Carmela Papa.
They seemed to follow the Sicilian naming convention, so I suspect that your grandfather was named after his paternal grandfather. Also, there probably was a sister named Angela born before Francesco.
Finally, here are some simple translations of Italian names into English:
Giuseppe = Joseph
Rosaria = Rose
Michele = Michael
Francesco = Francis or Frank
Hope that helps!
