Archivio Diocesano Reggio Calabria e Bova Online

Post by Primo Mattino »

I am very happy (and also a little proud because we are the first diocese in Italy to do so) that all the baptism-, marriage- and deathregisters of the Diocese of Reggio Calabria and Bova that I have been able to find and photograph (over 300,000 pictures) are now available online at this address: https://www.archiviodiocesanoreggiobova.it (also in English!)
That many other dioceses may follow.

According to the Archivists in the Frosinone, Ferentino, Sora area this isn't going to happen in their Dioceses.
But great news for all of those searching Reggio Calabria!

Well, our director Pia Mazzitelli is a kind of wonderwoman who managed to get two archbishops interested in this project. At first to get me the written permission to enter in the archives of the various parishes and take with me whatever I wanted and second to get the money to create and maintain this website.
Perhaps the archivists in Frosione etc. could get in touch with her just to now how she did that.

The problem is that they really don't want the entire collection to be available for anyone to look at. They don't have a problem with my taking a photo or copy for one client but the thought of anyone being able to see everything is a concern. I also think the Mormon church baptizing ancestors is a concern also. Actually I am raising money to restore the books and digitize some archives that are in poor condition with the reservation that they are not published in their entirety.

Let's hope they will experience that sharing things is much more beautifull than keeping things to yourself and that they will change their mind in the near future.
