Now that someone brought your thread back to the top of the list and I got a chance to read it, i am curious about the final outcome. Was your citizenship recognized by the NY consulate?

You will need a valid id to show proof of residence in the juridiction you are applying at. You will also need a valid id, preferably passport, but not required, when you get your Italian passport.

You should check out the laws on renouncing citizenship first. I'm fairly sure they won't let you renounce if; 1) You would be considered stateless after you renounce, and 2) If you are renouncing for the sole purpose of dodging any financial obligations or in an effort to skirt the law.
