Re: Uomo di Campagna

Thank you. This actually makes a lot of sense based on the subsequent records for these individuals.

Re: Help With Narrative

I've had similar issues. My grandparents were second cousins and my great grandparents were 1st cousins. There are also other documented instances of cousins marrying cousins, and I'm sure there are more that are not documented. As a result, I have some cousins to whom I am related at least 6 ...

Re: Verification for info On Biase Mazzone

I agree with most of what you indicated.

I would think that the use of "delli fu" would indicate that both parents are deceased. The use of the i in "delli" should indicate it applies to multiple people (in this case the father and mother).

I'm not sure that all four children are adults. I think ...

Uomo di Campagna

I have come across the profession of "uomo di campagna" on a marriage record from 1822 in Belmonte Mezzagno, Palermo, Sicily. The literal translation seems to be countryman.

On the Atto della Solenne Promessa, the groom, the groom's father and the bride's father are listed as "uomo di campagna ...

Re: Translation of Profession for 4X ggf

Thank you. I have found quite a few records for Giachino Spera, including his vital records and those of his children. He was married twice and I have the marriage allegati for both marriages. He had two children reach adulthood from his first marriage and I have the marriage allegati for them as ...

Re: Translation of Profession for 4X ggf

Thanks. I love reading history and will definitely look at that. I will have to do more research to see if Caporetto might apply to my 4x ggf, as he was in the army in 1835 and died in 1849, possibly as part of the Sicilian rebellion.

Re: Translation of Profession for 4X ggf

Thank you. I am assuming that Caporetto would be a town or area name. I found a town with that name in northern Italy/Slovenia. Is there another translation for Caporetto? Thank you again.

Re: Abbreviation of Dr.

Some other professions as well. I am a CPA in the US and the Italian equivalent is dottore commercialista. Sometimes in conversation my friends in Sicily call me dottore instead of my name. It's a little weird, but I've gotten used to it now. It's a term of respect for professionals.

That's ...

Re: Abbreviation of Dr.

Thankyou for the clarification. I had also read that dottore could be used for those with a university degree, not just a medical doctor or PhD as in English. In this case, he was being addressed as Dottore Don Onofrio -- I'm guessing he had a formal education??

Re: Abbreviation of Dr.

I had originally thought that, but everything I've seen is that dottore is abreviated as dott.

Abbreviation of Dr.

Does anyone know what the "Dr." would be in the below document? It appears to be an abbreviation of some type of title.

The phrase is "figlio del fu Dr. D. Onofrio"

Thanks in advance.

Jim

Re: Death Extracts in Latin

Thanks so much!!! This provides a lot of information for me to look into.

As for the name that can't be read, knowing it is his wife makes more sense to me. I found another record in which he remarried a Giocomina Vianni. Looking at the third document again, it looks like that's what it says ...

Death Extracts in Latin

I have found three death extracts in the marriage allegati in 1860. The extracts are in Latin, and I am having a devil of a time translating.

The first two use a printed form, and I am able to understand most of the printed text, but am having trouble with the handwritten sections. I can make out ...

Re: Help with Sicilian birth record -Sabatino

Hi Marisa,

On the birth record, I see the parents as:

Marianna ??, age 22, living in Alimena

Francesco Paolo Sabbatino, age 30, profession peasant sharecropper, living in ??. There is also something after his name which I cannot make out.

On the marriage record, it looks like the parents are ...
