am a little reluctant to ask for help as I am really enjoying the detective hunt in researching my family origins. I discovered this forum and have gone through all the posts for at least 50 pages and I have come to the conclusion that while I have come to a temporary halt in my fathers lines, there are people who are willing to help out.
My problem is that while I know the films to order from the LDS my nearest centres are a four drive in one direction and a three and a half hour drive in the other. I have resigned myself to the fact that I am going to have to wait for my annual leave, and travel there. In the meantime I thought I would post some details here and see what could be found. So, I don’t know much and the bit I do know my father told me while he was ill before he died.
My father is Mario Alfredo Garvani born at Fosdinovo in 1927.
His father was Alfredo Garvani and I only know that he died when my father was about 11 years so around 1938. (My father was close to 60 I think when my father was born). His father I think was Pellegrino.
My father’s mother was Ersilia Petacchi. Her mother’s name was Carolina Masetti. I think there were 8 children born to Carolina and I think her dad’s name was Luigi (not sure) I think my grandmother Ersilia died around about 1990 in March. I don’t have my notes with me for the exact date. I think she came from Licianna Nardi?
My grandfather Alfredo was a widower with 3 kids (2 boys and a girl) and he married my grandmother Ersilia who was herself a widow with 3 daughters (Giuditta, Carolina and Fides I think) her first marriage was to a Mr Bardine. My grandparents married and had 3 children – 2 girls and a boy (my father) Lydia, Lilla and Mario.
I have done the google and white pages thing but I am hesitant to contact anyone as my grandfathers’s first family were very much against the marriage and broke all contact with my grandfather’s other children.
So that is it!! I hope that someone can point me in the right direction or have any tiny bit of information for me. Thank you very much
Ersilia
help with father's line in Italy
Re: help with father's line in Italy
Hi!
I had a quick look on the ancestry.com site and there were 3 petacchi marriages in the Como area listed. Even if you are not a member, you should be able to access some of this info.
Also, in the NSW (Australia) passenger lists, a Messr T Garvani travelled from Melbourne to Sydney arriving 16/10/1911.
Is this of any help?

Re: help with father's line in Italy
Hi, thank you for your reply. Second thing first, my father came to Australia in 1952 and he never mentioned anything about anyone else coming over, but seeing that the T Garvani came over 16 years before Dad was born, and the family split, I would not be surprised. I wonder where you found that record as I have been through the National Archives and found all my fathers details but there was nothing about this other gentleman. Thoiugh I wouldn't rule out the possbility of being related as in my research I have come to the conclusion that there aren't too many of us with that name. (White pages and the Cognomi site). I will check the archives again but if you could give me a site url that would be great.
I have not subscribed to the Ancestry site as i was warned a while back that it is very difficult to get unscribed off. I will try and see if I can find out what you have. Do you have any details from that search you could pass on.
Also just a few corrections from my first post as I was away from my notes at the time. My grandfather Alfredo was about 73 when he died which puts his birthdate at around 1865 and he died at Fosdinovo. His children from his first marriage were Egidio, Hercule or Ercole and a girl.
My grandmother Ersilia was born in 1895 and died on the 9/03/1981 and her father was Guiseppe Petacchi and not Luigi as I wrote in the first post.
thank you for your reply. I will try and track down what you have given me and if there is anything else any one else can provide i would be grateful.

Re: help with father's line in Italy
Hi.
I found the information from: NSW Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists 1826 - 1922 which is on the Ancestry site.
Before I subscribed to Ancestry earlier this year, I was still able to do searches and obtain quite a bit of info for free.
There are a number of entries for Garvani in the USA.
Good luck.

Re: help with father's line in Italy
apologies for not responding sooner. I had to go away for work. thanks Suanj for the information. That is my father and I had that. I think what I am going to have to do is write to the comune and ask for the "family act" for my father.is that correct? Hopefully it will supply details for both of his parents which will give me a starting point for further requests.
would you be able to supply an address to write to and the correct "act" to apply for?
thanks for all the help
