Hello,

I'm researching the names below:

Domenico Cantoni...m, Anna Bruschi

Ermengildo Cantoni....m, Eurosia Ferrari

Melchiorre Cantoni....m, Eufrosina Levati

Melchiorre's children: Alinda E, Ercole E, William G, Teresa and Italia

Family cities include: Mezzano Inf, Lentigione, Colorno, Torrile

Also researching: Carmen Raffa.......m, Maria Pendolphi

Peter,

My main objective is to find the origins of my family, first to find the complete info of those I have. My great grandfathers family is pretty much complete, except for the actual records of birth and marriage. I guess this is what I want to accomplish first. I have written to Italy several times but no infomation has been found. Maybe I'm writing to the wrong place. After looking through my notes I see that most of my letters have been to the dello stato.

Then I hope to find the family certificate for his father Ermengildo so I can complete a list of my ggrandfathers siblings and their families.

I guess this is where I want to start............Thanks ...........Jodi

I think I'd like to start with finding the marriage bann or marriage records of my great grandfather MELCHIORRE CANTONI. I want the complete record. I wrote to the dello stato and received what I believe is just an info page. It has their names and marriage age and dates and that is all. How would I go about finding the whole record? Is this information accessible through the LDS films?

You can try LDS microfilms and you can also send another letter to Ufficio di Stato Civile and ask them for a copy of the full certificate of marriage. They are usually legalistic and contain the same or just a little more information. You can go to the book Discovering Your Italian Ancestors by Lynn Nelson. This book is very helpful to people researching the LDS micorfilms. Peter

Thank you peter, I'll start with that. That address should be easy enough to find for Mezzani. I have seen others copies of the marriage certs, they were pages long and listed as well, parents names for both sides of the family, employments, places of birth and various other little tid bits. I would love to have that record. I'll write there then and request that record.

I am researching for information on my great grandfather MELCHIORRE CANTONI born June 23, 1858 in Emilio-Romagna, Reggio-Emila, Mezzano Inferior, Italy.

His parents were Ermenegildo Maria Giuseppe Cantoni, born November 18, 1832 in Emilia-Romagna, Regio-Emilia, Brescello, Lentigione, Italy and Eurosia (Ferrari) Cantoni.

His grandparents were Domenico and Anna Maria (Bruschi) Cantoni.

I believe that my great grandfather may have had a sister named Alinda.

Melchiorre married Eufrosina Levati, born December 08, 1864 in Torrile, Parma, Reggio-Emilia, Italy. They married December 03, 1885 in Mezzano Inferior, Italy. The following children were born to them:

Alinda Eufrosia Melania Cantoni September 1886
Ercole Ermenegildo Cantoni November 06, 1887
William Guido Mario Cantoni March 29, 1889
Teresa Albertina Sterina Cantoni October 22, 1891
Italia Cantoni June 1893

This is all I know, I would appreciate any information you are willing to share concerning this family. I am especially interested in finding the complete family of my great great grandfather Ermengildo Cantoni and his parents Domenico and Anna.

Hi Jodi: currently Mezzano Inferiore is called Mezzani 's Common.
The Cantoni family from Mezzano Inferiore I've only this news:
Giuseppe Cantoni born in Boretto oct. 1841 and died in Mezzani 1906 around.(Boretto village + Lentigione village=Brescello town in year 1859)
11 Sons of Giuseppe Cantoni, but listed 9, sorry:
1) Riccardo (born in Mezzani, 9 apr. 1869 - died Colorno, 24 June 1929). Riccardo's son: Fernando died in 1969.
2) Paride died to 29 age in Castelnuovo Sotto
3)Egisto
4)Elvira
5)Fanin
6)Ninetta
7)Dante died to 92 age. Dante's son: Iginio (born in Mezzani, 1902 - died in Parma, 6 feb. 1986),

Arnaldo (born in Mezzani, 8 May. 1886 - died Mezzani, 1966 around)
9)Fernando. Fernando's son: Serino (born in Mezzani, 15 apr. 1926 - living).

WOW, you make me feel like I could jump right out and touch this family. Unfortunately I don't recognized any of those names but will keep them just the same, maybe I will find a connection. It seems that there are many CANTONI in the area. I do know that my great great grandfather Ermengildo did die in Colorno on may 22 1906. I also know that his wife passed before him. I did receive notice from the della stato of Colorno a paper with his passing date and the words "widower of Eurosia (Ferrari) Cantoni on it.

I honestly know nothing of my LEVATI, FERRARI or BRUSCHI connections. To me they are nothing more then the maiden names of wives and we all know how hard they are to trace. The only other name I have is that of Eufrosina's father and his name was Giuseppe Levati.

I have also been lead to believe that my CANTONIs' were all born poor catholic peasants and were "landscapers" "gardeners" by trade. I also have record somewhere that during the late 1800's about 1881 most of this family changed religions and entered the methodist church.

What would really help me most is to know where I would write to obtain a "family certificate" for Ermengildo Cantoni (in Brescello???) I gather from your email that is where I should write.
