Basile
Basile
My husband's great grandfather was Neuezio Basile. He arived at Ellis Island in 1901. Neuezio Basile was from Gesso. After arriving in America he settled in Hammonton, New Jersey. I am looking for anything about the Basile family from Gesso and/or anything concerning the Basile surname in general.
Here is the record for the passenger.

Re: Basile
Welcome to IG!
Can you provide the name of wife and children? Year or exact dates of birth for all? Did he go by another first name? Was he married here or in Italy?
Have you collected all US records?
By providing more details members can better direct your search!

I am posting a copy of the manifest for reference.
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0014
I believe the first name is probably Nunzio, and was just mistranscribed by Ellis Island.
The manifest also says he was going to a cousin Giuseppe Vaccarella. Is that a family name also?

Mary Jo, I'm so glad you posted the manifest
I was looking at possible census records, I think his age on the manifest may be 34 (not 24) ??

Re: Basile
The Basile surname is listed as a base surname from which all other variations of the name (Basili BaseliomBaselli Baseggio, Basezzi etc) are derived and is a distinct southern Italian surname. The surname is first noted in the Saint Basilio the Great in the 400AD period in Cesarea in the middle east which later became a last name from the Latin Basilius and Greek Basileios signifying King. It became popular as a first name after the Saint Basilio became more worshiped in Italy during the Middle Ages and later became a last name by 1261AD when it was first noted as a family name. =Peter=

I have to wholeheartedly agree with this statement from the website you posted:
I've found even in US records it's almost a given - if you know the location, you can find the family.Anyone who has been successful in their genealogical research will quickly advise that the most important piece of information needed to trace ancestors is a place name (village of origin, birth or last residence.) I venture to say that it's actually even more important than the immigrant's surname! Why? Because the valuable information you seek is usually organized, indexed and stored and indexed geographically: country, county, region, village, town, city name. The same surname can show up in other villages and be entirely unrelated, costing months of lost research time.

Re: Basile
Hello Laura
!
Neat record.
Since she was 33 in 1902, it makes sense that Nunzio would have been 34 in 1901.
Thank you! Valarie

Thank you everyone for all the helpful replies.
Onofrio was my husband's father's father. His wife was named Anna Ordile.
My husband's mother is a Manera. She is the d/o Calagero(George) Manera of Castel Umberto Sicily and Caroline Biafore b. July 05, 1896.
Caroline Biafore was the d/o Luigi Biafore and Louisa Tarsitano(Not sure about the spelling). Caroline's sisters were Mary & Rose.
Luigi Biafore was b. 1866 and arrived at Ellis Island from Pietrafitta, Italy April 24, 1903. He appears to have come over and returned to Italy a couple of times previous to his coming to stay in 1903.
=================================================
As a single man, age 21, Calagero Manera arrived at Ellis Island on March 23,1907 aboard the "Sofia Hohenberg" which sailed from Palermo, Sicily, Italy. He was from the town of Castell Umberto, Sicily, Italy.
Arriving with Calagero was his 20 year old brother Antonino Manera who eventually moved to West Virginia and became a coal miner. Antonino was known as Anthony and sometimes referred to as "Tom Micks" because of the western clothing he liked to wear.
Calagero took the America name George. He lived in Philadelphia with his wife Caroline and three daughters where he worked for the railroad (or Trolly company ?).
Eventually he and his family moved to Winslow Junction in South Jersey .There they had a farm, raising vegetables and chickens..
The three Manera daughters, Mary, Louise and Sarah, eventually married and moved to Hammonton New Jersey. After retiring from the farm, Calagero and Caroline moved to Hammonton also.
