Hi There,
I understand that there was a transit/internment/refugee camp in Santeramo during WW2. I believe a school was converted. I cannot seem to find any information that this was the case, can anyone help?
Thank you in advance!
Santeramo delle Colle Internment Camp, Bari
Re: Santeramo delle Colle Internment Camp, Bari
The internment camp in the outskirts of the city of Santeramo in Colle (BA) was one of the eight camps that were set up in Puglia to host allied POWs during WWII until 1943, when Italy surrendered.
In the immediate postwar years those camps were used to shelter Italian refugees from the territories annexed by Yugoslavia at the end of the war. Many of the camp guests later chose to emigrate toward Australia and the USA.
The ruins of the camp are still visible as late as 2019, when a local historical association planned a guided visit.
