Where in Italy was Salvator Muscoe, Sr. born?

Post by bellariver »

I am the 11th generation granddaughter of Salvator Muscoe, Sr. (I've also seen it spelled "Musco") He was born in Italy in the 1600s (unsure of exact date). I do know he moved to London after The Great Fire of 1666 to help rebuild St. Paul's Cathedral as he was a stone cutter/mason. His children then immigrated to America sometime during the 1680s. My question is this - how can I find out exactly where in Italy Salvator Sr. was from? Much of what I have read on the internet says that the name "Muscoe" is a corruption of a traditional Italian name (such as "Muscolini") and that there are no "Muscoes" at all in Italy. Is that true? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Muscoe is no italian surname; MUSCO is a italian surname.... also exist MOSCA ... it is very hard to know something, without to know birthdate and birthplace......
maybe no all Muscoe emigrated in USA around 1680s...here a Muscoe in UK:

Hi Bellariver.
I have found on the internet a reference to a Muscoe of St Giles in the Field, London.
To find out where your Muscoe ancestors originated in Italy, I would suggest you start with the archives of the district of St GIles in the Field to find out if there is any earlier information. This area is now in the London Borough of Camden, and the records are to be found at the Local Studies & Archive Centre, Holborn Library. Their website is www.camden.gov.uk/localstudies.

The other place you might find information is the UK Births Marriages & Deaths. Just key in UKBMD, follow the links, and enter the information in the appropriate boxes, and see what comes up.

(I'm assuming you don't live in the UK, so you might not be aware of the national arcchives here.) Hope this helps, and good luck.

I found a Mushoe (how an englishman might pronounce Muscoe in the 1600's..ie lascivious) getting married in 1680's at www.findmypast.com. Just put in Muscoe and 1600 to 1700 and search. =Peter=

I would like to get in touch with you since I'm Salvatore Musco(e)'s 8th great-granddaughter. I have sent a previous e-mail. He was in VA in the 1600's. The Muscoe name has been handed down through several generations in VA as first and middle name. I have more info.

Sicily. I am a descendant through my father's family, the Snows. Salvatore Musco(e) emigrated to London in the 1600's and had a son by the same name who then went to Tidewater Virginia also in the 1600/s, married a girl with a plantation, became a lawyer and entered the House of Burgesses. There is an article in The William and Mary Review about this. Put his name and William and Mary in internet search and it should pop up. Salvatore Sr. came to live in VA also and they both died in Virginia.

This is fascinating! I am Salvatore Muscoe's 11th great grandaughter (give or take.)

Are you referring to Elizabeth Muscoe, who married Thomas Garnett? I have been working on my family tree.
