Hello to everyone.
I have been researching my grandmother married name ROMANO (above ) for a while now and I am stuck on a point.
My grandfather Lorenzo Romano (Registered Alien) passed away in 1955 in Passaic NJ he owned a grocery Store so my grandmother did not need to work while he was alive. When he died, she needed to provide for herself. I know factually that she rec'd a social security #. However I am unsure if she became a US citizen. I have always been under the impression that you needed to be to get a SSN card. I have not been able to find any records of naturalization or the intent to naturalize.
Is this acurate or could she have gotten the card without becoming a citezen of the United States.
Any thoughts would be great.

Michael,
Even if she did not naturalize or did not qualify for citizenship status through her husband, I believe that she could have applied for a SS# as a legal alien. That option is still available today for applicants.
Perhaps someone else can verify.

HI BIFF,
There should still be some record someplace of at least being a legal alien though, Yes?
