Amending documents with Americanized first names

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Amending documents with Americanized first names

Post by mromano »

Many of the birth certificates I have collected have Italian first names (e.g., Costantino, Lucia), but later documents such as marriage certificates and children's birth certificates have Americanized first names (e.g., Constantine, Lucy).

Do I need to get these documents amended? If so, what does that really mean to amend them?

Thank you very much for your help! =)

If the inconsistencies are only with the given name and if they are simply anglicized versions of the Italian name, you'll likely have little difficulty. However, some consulates have become a bit less forgiving of discrepancies, so there are no guarantees.

Getting a document amended means that the original issuer of the document changes that document. The procedure depends on the municipality.
