Declaration of living ascendant

Iam not sure if this topic has been discussed before. But I'm just curious which Italian authority(s) a person would have gone or go to to renounce his/her Italian citizenship (outside of those who did so when they naturalized in the U.S. before dual citizenship was allowed). Wouldn't these authority(s) then keep a record of the renunciation if they had one?

I guess where I'm going with this is that would or has a consulate accepted a letter from an appropriate 'authority' that a person has never renounced citizenship and possibly take that in lieu of a signed declaration?

I'm guessing not, but I thought I would ask just the same for those of us who might have trouble getting the declaration.

Is there a reason you cannot get the declaration? This is one thing they do require even though, outside of naturalization, there is no way to renounce, outside of going to the Italian consulate and stating you want to renounce.

I've not heard of anyone submitting evidence in lieu of a declaration.

The relationship with my father is what you would call 'estranged', so I'm fairly confident that a signature would not be forthcoming.

Its incredibly frustrating since I have complied all my certificates and documents and its the last requirement I need to meet before my appointment in a few months.

Just thought I'd fire off a shot in the dark and explore a possible 'back door' way to come at this requirement in case of a negative response from my father.

That's a tough one. You might be surprised, though. If you ask for his help, he just might give it.

If not, go without it. They may not notice it's missing, but if they do, have prepared an affidavit from a close relative (brother, sister, mother) stating that he never renounced. I don't know if it would work, but it's worth a shot.
