Riccabono Surname
Riccabono Surname
Hello. I am having trouble finding my ancestor Josephine Riccabono. I know her exact birth date which is 15 Feb 1898. However, I cant find her in any ship manifests, as I believe she came over from Sicily. Which leads me to think about name changes. These are my ideas: Guiseppa or Guiseppina or some other diminutive of that name for Josephine; and just Ricca, Ricco, or Ricci for her last name. Her and her husbands second born son was named Justin, and their second born daughter was Annabella/e. Also, she may have been born in the United States, because I cannot find any evidence that she came over legally. Please I am desperately looking for help on this, as this is my great-grandmother. Thank you so much in advance for any help.
Re: Riccabono Surname
Is Riccobono her married name? She probably would have traveled under her maiden name if she came from Italy or Sicily. What is her husband's name?
It helps to know where the family settled, to perhaps find them in the census and get an immigration year from that.

Re: Riccabono Surname
I'm sorry. She married Philip Bartolone b. and they were settled in Detroit before 1930 but probably after 1920.
A while agoI found this website: http://sites.google.com/site/palermobirths/home via a web search for sicily births. Oddly enough, I looked through and found this:
Surname: Riccobono
Newborn: Francesca
Father: Antonio
Mother: Rosalia Mazzara
Birth date: 15 2 1898
District: Ufficio
I know I'm being really hopeful, but wouldn't it be a huge coincidence that a female Riccobono was born in Sicily on the same day as my great-grandmother? Maybe she had more than one name or simply wanted to be different when coming over to America? I do not know but I am off to see if this leads anywhere.
Edit: According to her social security death index record, her birthday is 10 Feb, not 15 Feb, but the family says it was the 15th... Hmmm...

Have you sent for her death certificate? Family may have listed exact place of birth, maiden name could also be included in it's correct form:

Name: Josephine Bartolone
Birth Date: 15 Feb 1998
Death Date: 12 Jun 1988
Gender: Female
Residence: East Point, Macomb, Michigan
Place of Death: Harrison, Macomb, Michigan
If this is in fact the right person, there is naturalization records available:

wldspirit, both of those records are correct. And no, I did not even think about doing that. Wow. Thank you. I guess I will get on that as soon as possible.
By the way, Merry Christmas everyone. Thanks again.

Re: Riccabono Surname
No problem....
I'm going to check another database to see if they have the actual application for naturalization.....this is something you are going to want as well..

Thank you all for your help so far.

Re: Riccabono Surname
Okay. I've found something out. According to the 1930 census, Josephine/Guiseppina emigrated here in 1914. She married Filippo/Philip when she was 17, so that would be appr. 1915. However, since it was so quick after she arrived, I'm guessing they were engaged beforehand. My hope is that someone out there can help me, because I cannot afford to pay for Ancestry... Thank you so much in advance...

Re: Riccabono Surname
Interesting site! I found an interesting name in there. Sarina di Mercurio, son of Salvatore di Mercurio. It says she was born in 1900. My great-grandfather's name is Salvatore di Mercurio, but he did not -- as far as I know -- have a daughter named Sarina. Perhaps she's related to another di Mercurio named Salvatore. Although, it's not impossible that Sarina is not a great-half-aunt of mine. My great-grandfather would have been 18 in 1900, so she could be a secret child or something. I doubt it, but it would be interesting. Could this Salvatore di Mercurio be the very same?jc4490 wrote:A while agoI found this website: http://sites.google.com/site/palermobirths/home via a web search for sicily births.
Surname: Di Mercurio

Mother: Scola Maddallena

Funny she was born on April's Fools Day... perhaps it is just a joke. Haha.
