medieval venetian records
OOPS! Peter, your contact is in fact a close member of the present family and what she has I have already - I think I said earlier that the Corfiot history was pretty well covered - so I admire your ingenuity in finding her on the Web, but there's no point in pursuing that in this context - though obviously there are lots of fascinating stories of this period, including that of Kali Quartano who was abducted by the Turks and became one of the Sultan's wives. Thank you anyway, though.ptimber wrote:Just to spice things up a bit, I am awaiting a response from the University of Thessalonika about Quartano so between Suanj and I we have you covered. As soon as my informant gets back to me I will let you know about the Greece-Venetian connection. Peter
By the way, we have also been in contact with the American Quartano from Sicily, but there doesn't seem to be any connection - my lot were very firmly based in Corfu from the mid-fifteenth century, so it's possible that the Sicilians derive from Corfu, but not vice-versa.
There are two lines I'm looking at now: one is that the name was originally Quarta, and another that it might have been Cartano. Suanj, thank you for the new URLS - I'll follow them up when I can.

Re: medieval venetian records
Baron Pietro Quartano was my great great grandfather. Family lore has it that the founding ancestor on Corfu was the secretary to the doge of venice so I suggest you look for a spelling that fits with such a person.
