Coco / LoCoco - Piedimonte Etneo, Sicily

Post by LaPecorella »

I am in search of cousins that live somewhere in New York State. My mother & I are in Putnam County & as far as we know, our cousins should be fairly close by. My great grandparents were Giuseppe Coco & Maria DiMauro from Piedimonte Etneo Sicily. Giuseppe had 2 brothers (pictured below...Giuseppe on the far right) Alfio & M.. (not sure of the name of 1). Their parents were Salvatore Coco & Venera (Macarone?). Alfio moved to NY & we were told that at Ellis Island the name changed from Coco to LoCoco. He came on Mar 16, 1911 from the port of Naples If anyone has any information please let me know, we would love to get in touch with our cousins!

Thanks,

Valentina

Have yhou tried reviewing the telephone directory for NY State at www.numberway.com? Just type inthe familyname and NY state and nothing else. First names in families tend to stay active from generation to generation and may be worthwhile contacting one or more and simply ask if they are your cousins. =Peter=

Wow! Thank you so much! This info seems to be correct especially the names of the children, they would match the names of their grandparents. I'm going to run all this by my mother tonight & my nonna this weekend to see. I really appreciate it! Where did you search for all these documents?

Here are some documents of interest:

Manifest of Italia 20 May 1905
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... ction=view
Salvatore and Teresa are part of a larger family group

Manifest of Perugia 22 November 1913
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... ction=view
Salvatore and Teresa arrive with their four children, Gaspare, Vincenzo, Maria, Costantina. Salvatore's father's name is Gaspare. For the last 3 children, it is written in pencil that it is claimed that they were born in the USA.

This claim is made earlier for Maria and Vincenzo on the 1910 census

Here is a slew of documents, mostly marriages. Only some are directly related to [Salvatore Lana & Teresa Martorana]. The ones that are not show an origin of Canicatti, and there is no doubt in my mind that they are in some way more distantly related. For some people, filling in that space on the marriage doc they just say "Italy". When they instead provide a specific location, that is a treasure that makes it easier to trace back and laterally; perhaps reflecting pride in their origins. That's what you've got here, your family tree is about to get much more densely complex.

(ItalGen limits the number of attachments, so a second message will follow)

I don't have time to follow through on this right now, and it will be a while before I do. Good luck!
