I have found more on www.ancestry.com than all the other sites put together.
I now it's not cheap, but they have more data by miles.
And you know there will always be someone lovely on this forum who will do look-ups if you are really cash strapped or just plain stuck!
I have had some very generous help with a couple of USA queries as I only have a British membership.

Searching for my great x3 grandfather Raffaele CIACCIA, also known as Raphael/Ralph CHURCH. He was born in Napoli around 1792 and arrived in London before 1812 with his brother Saverio CIACCIA, where they married sisters Ann and Jane FURNEAUX. He switched between CHURCH and CIACCIA all his life, which has made it difficult enough to pin him down. I want to find his origin in Italy.

For me it is Ancestory . com too. I have tried others, Ancestory seems to beat them all. The bonus is that I have not been spammed by Ancestory.

For US research, Ancestry.com is the best- hands down.

You won't be taking advantage of anyone. There are a host of people who are willing to help.
You might also want to check with your local library since many library systems offer free access to Ancestry and/or other pay sites to their members. If you're still living in the Hazelton area, the local library might be able to help direct you to other local resources.

Yep.....I am still living in that area and will most definitely go to the library to talk to them in person. I have searched Heritage Quest on-line through the library. I also found a local site on-line through the library, where people from my area help each other with research.....and to my surprise.....someone is searching for info on my paternal grandmother's sister!!! Very cool that I can at least supply them with the names of her siblings and parents!

The other thing I have found very useful is to google search the locality I'm interested in along with the word genealogy.
It's amazing how many family history societies and forums there are out there, where you'll find people with local knowledge!
For example I just googled 'Pennsylvania genealogy', and there are lots of listings.
Don't feel that you're taking advantage - this is so much fun and so addictive, it's a pleasure to be involved in someone else's research.
Give back if you can too. Offer local cemetery look-ups in your area, or join the Ancestry World Archives project and do some transcribing...it's low cost and just takes a little of your time.
