Looking for, or how to find ww2 italian naval service records of
Vincent Colonna
born Feb. 1922
Submarines
I have the German Red Cross records for when he was a pow after ITaly surrendered, and he was picked up in greece, but i am trying to find service records
Is there anyone w/any relations to the following families?
Colonna
Fabrizio
Di Fransico(spelling)
Mastracchio

Military records are released to the publiv after 75 years but there might be a possiblity to obtain some if not all the information you are seeking by going to the Ministero della Difesa-Escercito, Direziuone generale dei Servizi di Commissariato e Amministrativi, Via XX Settembre #11, Roma Italy. Write in both Italian and english,include a return envelope with a dollar for stamps (shows good faith effort on your part). Please keep me posted since this is the address where Italian POW in the USA personnel files were sent by the USA to Italy upon repatriation and this may be the repository for all Italian POW records. What approach should i take regarding the release of the information, eg. forms, templates to follow. What is the length of the letter, spacificly the part which is italian, since i am not a fluent writer per se, more literaly i am iliterate in italian, hence i am only able to speak and understand it.

Also to clarify the "picked up" part of my orginal post. He was captured by German Forces in greece, not american (we werent near greece at that time of the war chronologicly speaking).

I said MAY be the repository of his records as a POW for the Germans. That is wehy I asked you to keep me informed since I was wondering myself if all italian POWS captured by any side would have all their POW records in one place. As for the letter that is new ground for the both of us. I would assume you have some compelling interest for these records and you know what your interests are. I suggested english and Italian to show evidence of effort on your part to accomodate them. Go to www.freetranslation.com for translation of whatever letter you decide to send, if any. Sorry but i have no other experience with German captured Italian citizens other than American captured Italian citizens who were detained in the USA. Peter

Hi: in Greek, the italian soldiers (all division) was 500.000; dieds: 13.755, hurt: more 50.000, dispersed: 25.067, freezes serious: 12.368; not are records for prisoners..

The italian militar ship names: Vittorio Veneto, Giulio Cesare, Cavour, Littorio, Duilio, Stocco, Sirtori..etc.. but not have record for italian subamarines in Greek sea..very probable that Vincenzo Colonna was in Egeo sea, but around greek islands under italian commando: Rodi, Lero etc..

The surnames indicated are many common in my area-Molise region(especially: Fabrizio, Colonna and Mastracchio), Di Fransico very probable not exist in Italy, perhaps correct spelling Di Francesco... My husband relative with Colonna family coming from Molise region, Campobasso province...suanj

Thanks for the info, where do you think he could have been picked up? i never asked him where excatlyhe was captured, he just said greece. I wonder if the pow records could show what the name of the sub he was taken from.
O my grandmother who is a Di Fransesico(spelling) is from Naples, well w/in 10 miles of it

If:
-you know exact birthplace of Vincenzo Colonna, you can to write to "Archivio di Stato" of province birthplace and request any info of Vincenzo Colonna in "Liste di leva" or "Ruoli matricolari" folders in Archivio..

Di Fransesico(spelling)..

in Italy not exist, sure misspelled...regards, suanj
