Looking for info on Prato
Looking for info on Prato
Hi,
I am trying to find info on my grandfathers family. My great grandfather Joseph Prato was born in Ardore, Italy about 1883. He came to the U.S. between 1900 and 1909. His wife was Katherine (catherine, catarina) she died in 1917 and Joseph was probably her second husband. They had 6 children together, Frances, Anna, Camille, James, Anthony, and Nicholas (my grandfather). She already had 2 daughters, Theresa and Mary. Katherine has 2 other surnames, I assume one is her maiden name and the other is married name from her first marraige; Starta and Panetta. After her death, my great grandfather disappeared and my grandfather and his siblings went to an ophanage until they were eventualy released to relatives. I have ophanage records and newspaper accounts of my great grandmothers death. but that is all I have been able to find. If anyone could help me out in any way it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bobbi

Re: Looking for info on Prato
Hello and welcome to the forum-
Could you tell us where in the U.S. your ancestors settled? was it in Pa.? I see some Prato from Ardore going to a brother Giuseppe in Pa. on the Ellis Island records. If in Pa, where specifically?

I'm researching the families of Ardore so perhaps I can help. I am related to the Pratos through marriage. Please contact me if you are interested in exchanging information.
Re: Looking for info on Prato
And if I am not mistaken the were from San Nicola which is a hamlet in Ardore.
Re: Looking for info on Prato
I would like to thank everyone for their kind assistance so far.
Suanj the info about the ship is wonderful and I am following up on that now. The Fred you mentioned is my Great great uncle. My father confirmed that he had a great uncle Fred in PA that was a photographer. I am able to track the family from Beaver county to present (through ophanage records and census info). Of coarse after the death of my great grandmother my great grandfather disappeared. The older folks I'm sure knew of his whereabouts but wouldn't talk. My father and his cousin did research in the late seventies and early eighties. They were told by one of the older aunts in no uncertain terms to let it go and not to ask any more questions.

Re: Looking for info on Prato
nuccia I would love to exchange information with you, even though I don't know how much help I would be to you.
My great grandfather Enrico Giuseppe's (Henry Joseph) was supposedly from Ardore. His father was Vincenzo Prato. Vincenzo according to family lore came to the U.S. during Lincolns presidency (1861-1865). He returned to Italy during the recession after the war. He was married to Frances Marabouto. They had 6 children that I know of, 5 boys and 1 girl. My greatgrandfather was the oldest born about 1883; next was Ferdinand (Fred); Domenick born 31 Dec 1885; Felix; Emaculata (or possibly Magalene) not sure about the spelling on her; and Nick (or Nicholas).
My greatgrandfather, Ferdinand, and Felix all came to the U.S. sometime between 1895 and 1906. According to his son, Domenick arrived here in 1901. I have never seen anything indicating that the daughter ever left Italy. Nick also came to the U.S., but I do not know when.
My greatgrandmother's name was Catarina (Katherine) Panetta. She was accoding to family history Tonimina, Italy (I have never been able to find a town in Italy with this name or a variaton of this name). She had 2 daughters in Italy, Theresa and Mary with the surname Starta. She married my grewat grandfather in the U.S.
That is pretty much all I know about the family in Italy.

Vincenzo Prato was married to Francesca Morabito (which by the way is one of the most commonest surname, along with Zappavigna, in Ardore).bobbi1261 wrote:nuccia I would love to exchange information with you, even though I don't know how much help I would be to you.

That is pretty much all I know about the family in Italy.
It sounds like Caterina Panetta was from Antonimina which is only a few kms from Ardore.
As for Starta - this name is not common in the comuni in Reggio that I know of but variations of it are (Startari,Startaro) although I have seen it in the Milano area...
I will dig around and see what I can find - for now I have found a birth act for a Francesco Vincenzo Prato son of Filippo and Elisabetta Macri born in 1838 in Ardore---
